Why did the titan Atlas lead his brothers in the fight against the Olympian gods?

The ancient Greek myth tells that the huge Atlas ruled over a kingdom with steep banks, which exceeded the size of Libya and Asia combined. Atlantis (that was the name of the kingdom of Atlanta) lay behind the Pillars of Hercules. From another continent, in no way connected with ours, it was separated by islands covered with gardens.

The inhabitants of Atlantis built canals and mastered a huge central valley, irrigated with water from the mountains that surround it on all sides and leave a narrow passage to the sea. Palaces, baths, hippodromes, large port facilities and temples were famous for their beauty.

The Atlanteans, the inhabitants of the kingdom, went to war not only to the west - to another continent, but also to the east, up to Italy and Egypt. At first they were exceptionally virtuous and steadfastly bore the burden of their wealth in the form of myriads of gold and silver. But one day greed and cruelty took possession of them. Then the Athenians, with the permission of Zeus, defeated them and destroyed their power.

At the same time, the Olympic gods sent a flood to the land of Atlantis, which in just one day swallowed up the land so that both the piers and the temples were under a layer of mud, and the sea around ceased to be navigable.

It was the feeling of revenge that prompted Atlas, distinguished by his enormous strength, to lead the titans in the fight against the Olympian gods. Having been defeated, he received an exemplary punishment from Zeus - to hold the vault of heaven on his shoulders in the far west near the garden of the Hesperides.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Asphalt cleans the air 07.07.2006

The Italian company "Ital-sementi" after ten years of scientific research has developed a road surface that purifies the air from automobile exhaust gases.

This is asphalt with the addition of nano-particles of titanium dioxide. Under the action of sunlight, a chemically active additive converts unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen and sulfur oxides into water, carbon dioxide and solid salts.

Experiments carried out in a sealed chamber showed that titanium asphalt, illuminated by fluorescent lamps, decomposes 400% of nitrogen oxides in 99 minutes. The remaining harmful gases, when the road surface is illuminated with sunlight (these experiments were carried out in natural conditions, on the road), decompose by 5%. It is calculated that if only 75% of the streets and squares of a big city are covered with new asphalt, the air in it will become twice as clean.

So far, 900 tons of titanium asphalt have been produced. Its deliveries are planned to 18 countries, including France, India and China.
