No, not the one on which Andersen's "steadfast tin soldier" swam, but the real one, on which a person can ride.

To make it, you need to stock up on old newspapers, glue, paint, battens, plywood and, most importantly, a blank on which the boat is glued. For this purpose, a finished boat can be used.

If you want to create a whole fleet of paper, then get a boat of the required capacity, load capacity and shape for a short time. After making the first ship, you can take any number of copies from it.

The easiest way is to make a kayak.

paper boat

A wooden kayak (it will serve as a form) is placed upside down on the table and smeared with a thin layer of technical vaseline so that the paper does not stick to it. The surface of the bottom and sides are pasted over with newspapers. Three people do it: one smears the sheets with glue, the other puts them on, and the third smoothes them with his palms and a rag, expelling the air trapped between the layers.

Lay sheets in a circle. They start, let's say, from the bow, on the starboard side and go along this side to the stern; then go to the port side and glue its surface.

The sheets have a short edge to the edge of the board and put them so that in the middle they find each other. This strengthens the bottom. Thus, if the board consists of a layer of 25-30 newspaper sheets, then the bottom consists of 50-60 sheets.

Do not rush to glue the whole boat at once. A thick layer of paper dries for a long time, and the glue may deteriorate or "bloom", and all work will be lost. After applying every five to six layers, take a break to dry. In hot summer time, one day is enough for this; in winter - 5-6 days.

A kayak 4-4,5 m long will require about 250-300 newspapers.

You can glue with casein glue, carpentry glue or flour paste. Chrome alum or potassium dichromate (8-10 g per liter of glue) are added to carpentry and flour glue.

After the newspapers have dried well, cut off the paper protruding over the sides with a sharp knife and remove the glued boat from the blank. For greater strength, the boat can be pasted over with gauze.

Then the kayak is impregnated with pitch from the outside and inside. Hot (but not boiling) var is diluted with a small amount of kerosene or gasoline. This is a flammable mixture, so the WORK ON IMPREGNATION OF THE KAYAR SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT IN THE OPEN AIR IN DRY, WARM WEATHER IN THE PRESENCE OF ADULTS.

The impregnated and dried kayak is painted two or three times with light oil paint. The body is so strong that it does not need a wooden frame.

To fasten the deck (deck) along the sides, 4 slats with a section of 10x25 mm are sewn on thin nails (two for each side). The paper is clamped between them, resulting in a kind of fenders.

The cockpit - a hole in the deck where the rower is placed - is limited in front and behind by beams, and on the sides by bulwarks - rails placed on edge. The plywood deck is nailed to the fenders, beams and bulwarks. A deck is cut out of four pieces of plywood - separately for the bow, stern and two side parts. A plywood breakwater is attached to the bow of the deck. Plywood is painted on both sides with oil paint. Moreover, they paint plywood before nailing it to the deck.

For the oar, a pole 2,5 m long is taken and plywood blades are cut into it.

Those who will use paper boats should remember that they require drying after each ride. Do not leave them in the water for a long time. Store boats indoors or under a shed.

A paper boat usually weighs 10-12 kg. To transport it to the water, you can make a cart with wheels or a baby carriage.

REMEMBER THAT KAYAKING IS ONLY ALLOWED FOR THOSE WHO CAN SWIM AND THAT YOU MUST ALWAYS HAVE A LIFEBUOY (cork or inflatable) on board.

Latest news of science and technology, new electronics:

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

remote control of the brain 24.08.2017

When we see how someone controls someone else's brain from a distance, makes someone else run, jump, wave their arms, etc. against their will, this means that we are watching a sci-fi movie, or some kind of mystical fantasy. Although modern science is doing everything possible to make such a fantasy come true.

Researchers from the State University of New York at Buffalo have learned to literally control the mouse - using the method of magnetic-temperature stimulation. The matter was not without genetic engineering: the gene for a protein was inserted into the animals, which controls the flow of ions through the cell membrane and which simultaneously responds to temperature.

Once in the membrane of nerve cells, such an ion channel stimulated their activity when heated: the ion gate opened, the ions rearranged, the potential difference outside and inside the membrane changed, and the cell generated an electrochemical pulse.

The heater was magnetic nanoparticles made of cobalt ferrite and manganese ferrite. The nanoparticles were injected into a specific area of the brain where there were genetically modified neurons; the particles stuck to the surface of the cells, and now it only remained to heat them up in an alternating magnetic field - due to the rapid changes in the magnetization, the nanoparticles released heat, activating heat-sensitive ion channels.

Arnd Pralle and his colleagues have been developing this method for about ten years - it all started with the stimulation of cell colonies growing in laboratory glassware, they were replaced by roundworms, and now it has come to mice.

The researchers experimented with the motor areas of the brain: thus, by acting on the motor cortex, mice were forced to run, and when stimulated by the striatum, the rodents began to spin in place. Stimulation of other zones plunged the mice into a stupor, so that they could not move a single paw. According to the authors of the work, the neurons that were affected by nanoparticles and the field remained alive and well, despite repeated stimulation.

The advantage of magnetic-temperature stimulation is that it can turn on very small neural groups, only 100 micrometers across.
