What is the magnitude and strength of an earthquake?

The magnitude of an earthquake is understood as a conditional value that characterizes the total energy of vibrations caused by an earthquake.

The magnitude makes it possible to compare earthquakes by the energy released in their sources. The magnitude of an earthquake is proportional to the logarithm of the energy of vibrations caused by an earthquake: an increase in magnitude by one corresponds to an increase in the energy of vibrations by a factor of 100. The magnitude of the earthquake is estimated on the Richter scale (not a single earthquake was recorded more powerful than 9 points on this scale).

Speaking about the strength of an earthquake, they mean the intensity of its manifestation on the earth's surface above its focus (shaking and destruction at the epicenter). To assess the strength of an earthquake, a 12-point seismic scale is used.

The strength of an earthquake depends not only on its magnitude, but also on the depth of the source and the geological conditions of the epicentral zone. If the earthquake source is located near the earth's surface, destruction at the epicenter can occur even with a magnitude of about 5 points, and with a source at a depth of hundreds of kilometers, there may be no destruction on the surface even at a magnitude of 7 points.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What causes gout?

Gout has been known since ancient times. In the old days, it was considered a "noble disease", because they thought that gout comes from too much food and too much wine drunk, and, of course, only rich people could afford this. But in reality, one of the conditions for the development of gout is an excess of uric acid in the blood. The body of a person suffering from this disease is not able to absorb and break down some proteins. They are called purines and are ingested through food.

The most rich in purine are the liver, kidneys, pancreas and goiter of the animal, sardines, anchovies, turkey meat, pork, and beef. A doctor will usually recommend that a gout patient avoid these foods. This is a very painful disease, and the pains usually come on suddenly.

In most cases, the big toe starts to hurt first. And then very soon, literally within a few hours, all the joints swell, become red, hot and very sensitive. The pains are so strong that a person is terribly afraid that no one touches the sore spots. This fear is very typical of gouty people. The exacerbation lasts for several days or weeks, and then passes completely - until the next attack.

A predisposition to gout develops, perhaps not only because of the food a person consumes, but also because of physical overload, emotional disturbances, and possibly allergies.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

A device for charging a smartphone and simultaneously backing up data 02.09.2016

Many owners of Android smartphones do not back up data from their devices for the simple reason of inconvenience: after all, for this you need to select cloud storage, download an application, make settings, and others are simply too lazy to connect the device to a computer and make a copy of the data on a local device. One way or another, all these actions require some time, which, as a rule, is not enough anyway. It would be much easier if backing up data was as easy as...charging a smartphone, for example.

Toshiba has made this dream come true, which has amazed everyone. What is the interest of this device, you ask. In appearance, the novelty, which does not even have a name yet, is an ordinary round platform with a power supply, reminiscent of an induction panel for charging mobile gadgets. But no. The smartphone is traditionally connected to the device via a USB cable, after which it starts charging and pairs with the internal storage (500 GB or 1 TB) of the Toshiba device.

The advantage of the device is that you only need to set it up once, after which you can forget about any backup difficulties. Now the backup will be updated every time you put the device on charge, and all your photos, videos or work documents will not be lost if the smartphone fails or is lost. Moreover, with this innovative device, you can transfer all your data to a new smartphone.

But what if you need a backup from two different smartphones? No problem! New from Toshiba can recognize different devices; in this case, backups will be created in the corresponding folders of the internal storage, and you can view them when you connect the device to a PC, which is also very convenient. There is plenty of space on the internal drive - depending on the model, 500 or 1000 GB of space will be available to the user, so there will be no problems with overflow.
