Is it necessary to take an optical telescope out of the atmosphere to significantly increase its resolution?

Since the mirror of a telescope must rotate to track an object in the night sky, it must not be too heavy or else it will deform under its own weight as it rotates, negating the precision work done during its manufacture. A consequence of this limitation on the mass of the mirror is a limitation on its dimensions.

That is why, until 1975, the largest American telescope in the world with a mirror with a diameter of 5 meters, installed on Mount Palomar in California. Then this record was broken: in the North Caucasus, near the village of Zelenchukskaya, the construction of a telescope with a mirror with a diameter of 6 meters was completed.

In the last decade of the 20th century, a new stage in the development of optical telescopes began, associated with the introduction of the so-called active optics. The solution to the problem came down to the manufacture of thin mirrors (about 8 centimeters thick with a diameter of 10-10,8 meters), the shape of which is corrected by a computer using several dozen movable hydraulic supports. Composite mirrors have become an alternative to monolithic mirrors, consisting of a single block. So, the mirrors of two telescopes installed on the Hawaiian extinct volcano Mauna Kea, each 36 meters in diameter, consist of 2 hexagonal fragments no larger than XNUMX meters in size.

Another breakthrough in the field of improving optical telescopes is associated with the introduction of adaptive optics, which makes it possible, if not completely eliminate, then significantly reduce the distortion of images of celestial objects due to atmospheric turbulence. This technology "adjusts" the telescope's mirror to changes in the atmosphere, so that defocusing of the image caused by changes in air density, its currents and wind is minimized.

Experts say that the cost of such ground-based telescopes is much less than the cost of just repairing the Hubble orbital telescope in space, and their resolution is an order of magnitude (about 10 times) higher than that of an instrument placed in space.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

New combat aircraft Airbus 25.01.2019

Dassault Aviation and Airbus have signed the first research contract for the Future Air Combat System (SCAF), which will focus on next-generation combat aircraft, the companies said in a statement Wednesday.

The launch of joint research was announced by French Minister of the Armed Forces Florence Parly and her colleague from Germany Ursula von der Leyen. The two-year research work is expected to start on February 20, 2019 and will cost €65 million.

"Today, in the presence of a colleague from Germany, I notify you of the first contract on the SCAF concept and architecture," said Parley. In turn, von der Leyen drew attention to the fact that France and Germany are "deepening cooperation in their own interests and in the interests of the European Union."

As part of the research, it is planned to determine the size and design of the future military aircraft, as well as the maximum speed, technical equipment, etc.
