What is allowed to Jupiter is not allowed to the bull

Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology

Phraseologism: What is allowed to Jupiter is not allowed to the bull.

Meaning: About unfounded claims (iron.).

Origin: From Latin: "Quod licet Jovi, non licet bovi". From ancient Greek mythology. The supreme god of Olympus Zeus (in Roman mythology - Jupiter) liked the daughter of the Phoenician king Europe, he turned into a bull and kidnapped her.

Random phraseology:

There are no others, but those are farther.

Meaning:

To express regret about the past years, about friends, comrades of those years.

Origin:

From the novel in verse "Eugene Onegin" (1823-1831) by A. S. Pushkin (1799-1837) (8, stanza 51): "There are no others, and those are far away, // As Sadi once said." Sadi is Saadi, the famous Persian poet, writer and thinker (Muslihiddin Abu Muhammad Abdallah ibn Mushrifaddin, 1203 or 1210-1292). For the first time, this saying of Saadi was used (in a slightly different form) by A.S. Pushkin as an epigraph to the poem "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai" (1824): "Many, like me, visited this fountain, but there are no others, others wander far away ". In Pushkin's time, Saadi's poem "Bustan", from where this line is taken, has not yet been translated into any of the European languages. Pushkin took this saying of Saadi from the "Eastern" poem "Lalla Ruk" then known in Russia by the English romantic poet and prose writer Thomas Moore (1779-1852), who speaks there of a fountain "on which a certain hand roughly inscribed the well-known words from Sadi: "Many, like me, contemplated this fountain, but they are gone, and their eyes are closed forever."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Created artificial blood 27.07.2012

Around 96 million blood transfusions are performed worldwide each year. Blood is an eternal deficit in medicine. Thirty years ago, Japanese, American and Soviet scientists tested a blood substitute based on fluorinated hydrocarbons, but it turned out to be fraught with dangerous side effects. French biologists from the Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris) have learned how to grow red blood cells in the laboratory from bone marrow stem cells that produce blood.

So far, only 10 billion red blood cells have been made (this number corresponds to two milliliters of blood, and two trillion cells are needed for a transfusion). A suspension of erythrocytes, administered to a volunteer who gave his bone marrow for experiments, behaved normally in the blood.

Now the French intend to achieve mass production of red blood cells. This may take 5-10 years. If we take the bone marrow of a person with a zero blood type as a basis, such blood is suitable for transfusion to anyone, regardless of their blood type.
