Narcissus

Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology

Phraseologism: Narcissus.

Meaning: A common noun for narcissistic, self-satisfied people.

Origin: From ancient Greek mythology. As the Roman poet Ovid narrates in his Metamorphoses, one day Narcissus, a handsome young man, the son of the river god Cephis and the nymph Leiriope, who had never loved anyone else, bent over a stream and, seeing his reflection in it, fell in love with himself. Since Narcissus could not connect with his "beloved", he died of anguish, and his body turned into a flower. The title of one of M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin's satires is "The New Narcissus, or In Love With Himself".

Random phraseology:

Past days charm.

Meaning:

About a happy, carefree time of life.

Origin:

From the poem "Song" (1818, first published under the title "Former Time" in 1821) by Vasily Andreevich Zhukovsky (1783-1852): "The charm of the past, // Why did you rise again? // Who woke up the memory // And silent dreams? These lines became widely known due to the fact that they were set to music by A. Pleshcheev (1832), P. Bulakhov (1846) and Y. Capri (1879) and thus became the words of a popular romance.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
