Up the stairs leading down

Bel Kaufman
Bel Kaufman

Phraseologism: Up the stairs leading down.

Meaning: About actions that at first glance contribute to something, changing the situation for the better, but in fact only worsen the situation.

Origin: The title of the novel (1961) is about a school written by the American writer Bel Kaufman (b. 1911), granddaughter of the famous Jewish writer Sholom Aleichem (pseudonym of Sholom Nokhumovich Rabinovich, 1859-1916). B. Kaufman lived in Odessa until the revolution of 1917, after which she moved to the USA with her family. The idea to name her novel exactly like that was born in her thanks to the following episode: once the administrator of the school where B. Kaufman taught at that time made a memorandum about the behavior of one of the students: "I was detained for violating the rules: I went up the stairs leading down" . Although at first glance this phrase sounds absurd, it is based on one, quite practical consideration. In American schools, in order to avoid crowds and, accordingly, childhood injuries, one staircase was only allowed to go up, while others were only allowed to go down.

Random phraseology:

You can't fly from a good life.

Meaning:

A person who is satisfied with his life will not want to change anything.

Origin:

The expression arose from the story of I. F. Gorbunov (1831-1895) "Aeronaut". There is a crowd of people around the balloon. There is talk about how the balloon is inflated and how it will fly. "With a man? - With a man ... The German himself will fly, and with him the tailor, - Tailor ?! - The tailor hired to fly ... The merchants hired ... - The tailor! - Drunk? - No, through it, as it should. - Why is he flying? - A person is confused, well, he flies. Of course, you won’t fly from a good life, and, therefore, he spun ... "

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

5G standard 10.12.2013

Bell Labs, a research center owned by Alcatel-Lucent, believes that fifth-generation (5G) communications technologies will lead to a rethinking of the nature of mobile networks, as well as the way mobile devices connect to networks. The very concept of "cellular communication" will disappear with the transition to 5G, engineers say.

Modern mobile communication networks consist of base stations that form so-called "cells", i.e. coverage areas. Base stations located next to each other form the network coverage area.

"We believe that the architecture consisting of cells will be replaced by an architecture consisting of devices. In the new structure, a device (machine or person) will be able to exchange numerous information flows through heterogeneous communication nodes," said Bell Labs engineer Federico Boccardi ).

Boccardi talks about devices that can connect with each other, because he believes that their total number will increase significantly in the coming years. Such devices will be able to independently decide how and when to transmit or receive information. For example, sensors will automatically transmit data to the server, etc. As a result, the structure of the network will cease to be cell-oriented and become device-oriented, the researcher concludes.

Engineers name also other possible changes. There is an assumption that devices in 5G networks will be able to work in parallel in several frequency bands, using one band to receive and the other to transmit data. As a result, the mobile network will be "rebuilt" based on the requests of each mobile device located in its coverage area.

The researchers also predict that MIMO technology, which allows data to be transmitted and received simultaneously using multiple antennas (thereby increasing throughput), will quickly spread. This will lead to the fact that the size of antenna systems installed on the roofs of high-rise buildings will increase.
