Siren

Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology

Phraseologism: Siren.

Meaning: About someone who is trying to win someone's trust with flattering, "sweet" speeches - for the sake of any of their interests (ironic, disapproved).

Origin: From ancient Greek mythology. Sirens - two daughters of Forkiy and Keto (sometimes Aheloy and Steropu are called their parents) - half woman (to the waist), half bird - with wings and bird legs. They are sometimes described as women with fish tails, similar to the mermaids of Russian folklore. Sirens became household names thanks to the legendary poet of Ancient Greece Homer (IX century BC), who spoke about two sirens who tried to lure and destroy the Argonauts with Odysseus at the head: "First of all, you will see the Sirens, an inevitable spell / / They catch seafaring people coming close to them. / Whoever, out of ignorance, approaches those two sorceresses, / Hears their sweet voice, he will neither have a wife, nor minor children / In his house, he will never console with a welcome return.

Random phraseology:

My Sweet and Tender Beast.

Meaning:

About a man who strangely combines opposite human qualities - both rudeness and tenderness.

Origin:

The title of the film (1978), shot by the Moldavian film director Emil Loteanu according to his own script, based on the story "Drama on the Hunt" by A.P. Chekhov.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Ion microscope 07.02.2021

Scientists from the University of Stuttgart (Germany) have developed a powerful ion microscope to study quantum gases.

Unlike most microscopes designed to study quantum gases, this device is not limited to the reconstruction of two-dimensional systems and allows you to study with spatial and temporal resolution completely different systems, such as samples in the ground state, Rydberg ensembles, or cold ions immersed in quantum gases.

The researchers plan to use the new tool to expand research on cold ion-atom hybrid flows, and intend to prove the collision energies in these flows in ultracold mode.
