Crow settlement
Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov
Phraseologism: Crow freedom.
Meaning: 1. Scandalous communal apartment (big family). 2. A work team where envy, intrigue, mutual hostility, etc. reign.
Origin: From the novel (parts 2, 13) "The Golden Calf" (1931) by Soviet writers Ilya Ilf (1897-1937) and Evgeny Petrov (1903-1942): "Meanwhile, the inhabitants of the large communal apartment number three, in which Lokhankin lived, were considered wayward people and were known throughout the house for frequent scandals and heavy squabbles. Apartment number three was even nicknamed "Crow's Settlement". The writer Viktor Ardov recalls the origin of this expression in the article "Wizards": "Often I went to E. P. Petrov in his rooms in Kropotkinsky Lane (this apartment is quite accurately described in the "Golden Calf" under the name "Voronya Slobidka"). Evgeny Petrovich first gave this name to his real home, and then transferred it to the novel, along with a similar description of the situation and the inhabitants of the apartment "(Memoirs of Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov. M., 1963). The expression is sometimes used as an example of the so-called self-fulfilling prophecy , all the inhabitants of Voronya Slobidka were afraid of a fire, constantly talked about it, firmly believed in its inevitability and even waited for it.

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive The world's most powerful X-ray laser
21.09.2023
The Linac Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II), the most powerful X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) in the world, has been successfully launched at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Energy.
This latest X-ray laser, updated from the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), promises unprecedented capabilities that could usher in a new era in X-ray research.
Experts believe that LCLS-II, with its potential to probe the internal structure and properties of materials at the atomic and molecular level, could lead to revolutionary discoveries in the development of materials with unique characteristics. These discoveries will, in turn, have an impact on a variety of industries, from electronics to energy storage to aerospace.
LCLS-II will produce X-rays that are more than 10 times brighter than SLAC's existing X-ray free electron laser, LCLS.
The rate at which X-ray flashes are generated will also increase from 120 flashes per second to one million flashes per second.
