Word and deed

Muscovy
Muscovy

Phraseologism: Word and deed.

Meaning: About denunciations, testimonies.

Origin: Words that in Russia XIV-XVIII centuries. (before the reign of Catherine II) meant that the person who shouted them out wanted to give important evidence about a crime plotted against the royal person, that is, treason. To the exclamation "Word and deed!" guards immediately appeared, an investigation began, as a rule, with the use of torture, and often they tortured not only the one who was denounced, but also the scammer himself. Often this custom was used by people accused of an ordinary criminal offense who wanted to play for time or slander their accuser. Therefore, in court cases of that time, the expression "he said his word and deed" is often found. This institution of official denunciation and slander flourished especially during the reign of Peter I. It was destroyed (1762) by Catherine II as an odious institution of Russian statehood.

Random phraseology:

In the seventh heaven (to be).

Meaning:

Experience great joy, happiness, bliss.

Origin:

The turnover is associated with ancient ideas about the structure of the world, described by Aristotle in the essay "On Heaven". Aristotle believed that the sky consists of seven motionless crystal spheres, on which stars and planets are fixed. According to another version: the expression is associated with ideas about the sky as about seven rotating crystal spheres-heavens. Paradise is located on the upper sphere farthest from Earth.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Magnet hammers steel 26.01.2010

The pulse of the magnetic field makes holes in the steel sheet in a fraction of a second. Drilling steel is not easy - the drill quickly becomes blunt, and metal chips remain in the workplace. You can use a laser, but it requires a lot of energy.

Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Tools and Shaping Technology decided to use a magnetic field pulse. The installation consists of a charger, a capacitor and a solenoid. A charge accumulates in the capacitor, then it is discharged in microseconds, and a powerful current arises in the coil, which, in turn, generates a magnetic field pulse. The field is so strong that a piece of steel that is under its action literally flies out of the sheet.

"A laser makes a hole in 1,4 seconds, and a magnetic pulse in milliseconds," says project leader Dr. Verena Krausel. The new device is being tested at the Volkswagen plant.
