Prussian teacher won the battle of Sadovaya

Oscar Peschel
Oscar Peschel

Phraseologism: The Prussian teacher won the battle of Sadovaya.

Meaning: It is used as a reminder of the role of a school teacher in shaping a nation, its intellectual potential, morality, spirit, etc.

Origin: Usually erroneously attributed to the "Iron Chancellor" of Germany, Otto Eduard Leopold Bismarck. The author of the expression is Oscar Peschel (1826-1875), a professor of geography from Leipzig, and in the original his phrase sounds different. So, in July 1866, he wrote in the newspaper Zagranitsa edited by him: "... Public education plays a decisive role in the war ... when the Prussians beat the Austrians, it was the victory of the Prussian teacher over the Austrian school teacher." In Russia, after the Franco-Prussian war, the expression became associated precisely with this campaign, and therefore such a variant of Oscar Peschel's phrase became popular in Russian: "France was defeated by the Prussian teacher."

Random phraseology:

The situation is worse than the governor's.

Meaning:

About an extremely difficult, unpleasant situation (jokingly).

Origin:

There are several versions of the origin of the turnover: 1) the expression is taken from horse-breeding slang. The governor there was called a male probe, who was allowed to the mare to annoy her before mating with a thoroughbred sire. Phraseologism arose as a result of a punning rethinking by homonymous similarity, 2) the expression goes back to the decree of Paul I on the recovery of losses in the event of a mail robbery from the governor of this province, issued by him in 1800 in connection with a major mail robbery in the Kostroma province. The decree caused a real stir among the governors, 3. According to the author of the book "The Winged Word" (1930) S. G. Zaimonsky, this "image was inspired by the position of Don Quixote's squire. Sancho Panza, during his ill-fated governorship. The position of Russian governors is hardly was so bleak as to suggest such an aphorism."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Telomere lengthening for life extension 07.02.2015

Scientists from Stanford University have developed a method for stimulating the ends of chromosomes that are responsible for human aging.

Telomeres are the ends of chromosomes that perform a protective function. There is a so-called Hayflick limit associated with shortening of telomeres - the number of somatic cell divisions is approximately 50, after which the cells begin to show signs of aging. Studies have shown that the enzyme telomerase is capable of restoring DNA, which acts on telomeres, restoring their original length.

The new technology uses modified RNA carrying the reverse telomerase transcriptase (TERT) gene. The introduction of ribonucleic acid greatly increases the activity of telomerase for 1-2 days, during which it actively lengthens telomeres, and the programmed RNA breaks down. The resulting cells behave similarly to "young" ones and divide many times more intensively than the cells of the control group.

Thus, it was possible to lengthen telomeres by more than 1000 nucleotides, which is equivalent to several years of human life. What is important, the process is completely safe for health and does not lead to uncontrolled cell division: the immune system simply does not have time to respond to the RNA introduced into the body, which decays without a trace. The discovery will help increase the number of cells for drug research and disease modeling, and in the long term for life extension.
