EFFECTIVE FOCUSES AND THEIR CLUES Amazing Chinese cabinet. Focus Secret Directory / Spectacular tricks and their clues Focus Description: The assistants are easily rolled onto the stage by a beautifully painted cabinet placed on a platform with nickel-plated legs. The legs of the platform are on ball-bearing rollers with rubber-coated rims, which makes it very easy and completely silent to roll the cabinet on the floor of the stage. The artist says a few words about the fact that he was lucky to get a rare cabinet with interesting properties. He offers to carefully examine the locker. The assistant turns the cabinet (Fig. 167).
The artist offers to examine it inside as well. He opens the top lid, gives it to the assistant to hold, and opens the front door himself - the audience sees that the cabinet inside is empty (Fig. 168). To further convince the audience that the locker is empty, the artist runs his hand inside the locker.
Having first closed the front door, then lowered the top cover, the artist, with the help of an assistant, turns the cabinet around. Then the artist again, lifts the top cover, gives it to the assistant to hold and opens the front door - the audience sees a Chinese woman sitting inside the cabinet, fanning herself with a fan (Fig. 169).
The Chinese woman stands inside the cabinet, and the astonished spectators see that the height of the cabinet is approximately half the height of the Chinese woman (Fig. 170).
The artist helps the Chinese woman out of the locker. The assistant quickly closes the door and the lid, and turning the locker around once more, takes it backstage. A Chinese woman performs a fan dance to the music. The design and style of the illusion does not have to be Chinese at all, it depends on the taste and requirements of the performer. Focus secret: The cabinet is collapsible, its dimensions depend on the assistant, they should be approximately as follows: platform 90 × 90 cm, thickness of its frame 25-30 mm. On top of the frame, made for strength with a cross in the middle, plywood 8 mm thick is attached. The height of the legs together with the rollers is 70-75 cm. The cabinet consists of five walls. The width of the side walls is 78 cm, the height is 90 cm. The thickness of the side walls-frames is 25 mm with 71 mm plywood in the middle (panel). The width of the front wall-door is 90 cm, height 25 cm, thickness 40 mm. The top wall is a lid of the same thickness and appropriate size. The thickness of the rear wall frame is 171 mm with an XNUMX mm plywood panel embedded in it. On the back wall there is a folding bench that rotates on an axis (Fig. XNUMX), on which an assistant sits (in the figure, the bench is hooked to the wall).
The wall rotates on a thrust (vertical) ball bearing with a diameter of 15 mm. The bench is made on spring hinges that lift it up when it is not loaded. In the upper frame-cover there is a door-hatch that opens upwards. For strength and accuracy of assembly, two side walls are made with pins, with screw threads, on which "lambs" - nuts are screwed (Fig. 172).
In addition, for even greater stability of the side walls and the entire cabinet, it is recommended to put on the lower platform (base) on glue and attach with screws four strips 20-25 mm thick, 50 mm wide and equal to the width of the side walls (78 cm). The distance between a pair of planks is equal to the thickness of the side walls (25 mm). You can attach the same strips to the bottom of the top cover in order to insert the side walls into them, but we believe that the lower strips are sufficient, since the entire load falls on them (Fig. 173).
The figure shows the lower platform with slats attached to it; it is clearly seen that the planks form grooves between themselves, into which the side walls are inserted. For even more rigid fastening, two bolts can be passed through the strips with the side walls inserted into them on each side with “lambs” screwed on them, as in fig. 174, but even without that, the system will be sufficiently firmly tightened with bolts of the side walls from above on the lid and from below under the bottom.
Having passed the pins of the bolts through the holes in the platform and having applied (by all means!) Washers, they screw on the "lambs", than the walls are fixed motionless in the platform. Then the back wall is inserted, making sure that it rotates completely silently and easily in the lower bearing. Having inserted the lower axis of the rear wall into the bearing, it is attached to the front edge of the side walls with the help of collapsible hinges and pins inserted into them, then, carefully making sure that all the pins pass exactly through the holes intended for them, put on the top door with a cover in it . After inserting the cover into place, washers are put on the pins and screwed with "lambs". The assembly of the cabinet is completed, now you should check the rotation of the back wall with a bench. The wall should rotate freely without touching the side walls. By checking the rotation of the rear wall, the assembly of the cabinet ends. Now it remains to screw four nickel-plated legs with rollers into the flanges at the bottom of the platform and, for strength and stability, fasten them with resistant tubes that are twisted into "lambs". After assembling the cabinet, put the assistant on a bench and help her settle in such a way that she takes up as little space as possible and does not touch the cabinet when the back wall rotates. Demonstration of the illusion. Having taken the apparatus to the stage and turning it, it is shown to the audience (see Fig. 167). The assistant at this time sits inside the cabinet on a bench, clinging close to the back wall and holding hands on the handrails made for this. As soon as the apparatus is placed with the front wall towards the audience, the assistant quickly turns along with the back wall on the axis and thus finds herself outside the cabinet (Fig. 175).
The assistant, standing behind, helps her in this, giving an imperceptible push to the back wall to turn. We repeat, it is necessary to carefully check the fit of the assistant on the rotating wall, so that when turning her body does not touch the side walls and her head is not visible. The artist opens the top cover and the front door, showing that the cupboard inside is empty (see Fig. 168). It then closes the front wall and the top cover. The assistant at this time turns the back wall on the axis and finds herself inside the cabinet. Stepping off the bench, she hooks it to the back wall and sits inside the closet, trying to take up as much space as possible. It is clear that the back wall, as soon as the bench is fastened to it, must quickly turn the bench outward so that the painted wall is inside the cabinet. As soon as the top cover opens, the assistant gets up and walks closer to the front edge. Spectators are convinced that the locker is too small for a person to fit there (see Fig. 170). As soon as the assistant comes out, the artist closes the front door, and the assistant lowers the top cover and at the same time quickly and imperceptibly turns the back wall with the bench inside. Then, turning the cabinet around, it is shown to the audience and taken backstage. In conclusion, we give one more small, but very important advice: the side edges of the back, rotating wall must be made rounded so that they can easily rotate. It is necessary to ensure that there are no gaps when the wall is in place. If the gap is visible, then the audience will immediately suspect that the back wall is fraught with something. You can fill the edges of the wall with a black strip of flannel or velvet to avoid translucence. The device should be stored unassembled, putting it in a specially made packing box, which will be very small in size and convenient for transportation. Author: Vadimov A.A.
