Focus Description:

The magician asks the audience to borrow several valuable things: rings, earrings, bracelets, watches. Having collected them on a plate, he returns to the table and calls one of the spectators to his stage. She gives him a silk handkerchief to hold.

Shows things one by one and asks whose they are. Then he also places them one by one in a handkerchief held by the spectator. Having thus shown all the things and put them in a scarf, he takes it and ties it in a knot. Then he gives the “assistant” a wooden box and, pulling out a drawer from it, asks him to put a bundle of things there, which he does. The box is closed.

“Please hold this box of valuables,” says the illusionist. -Are you holding well? Are you sure it's good? Let me check.

The performer takes the box, pulls out the drawer, but there are no things there. He goes with her to the table and, taking a wand, knocks on the inside of the box, proving that the things are not there.

At this time, at the end of the hall a voice is heard: “Comrade, you have an urgent parcel.” The magician places the box on the table and talks to the man who is carrying the box tied with twine. Having received the “parcel” in his hands, he puts it on the table, opens it and takes out a beautifully painted box. The assistant brings a table on which he places the box. The performer unlocks it, takes out the second box and places it next to the first.

The illusionist unlocks the second box and takes out a third one, which he places on the table, and the second one on top of the first. He unlocks the third box, takes out the fourth from it and lowers it onto the table, and places the third box on top of the second. He unlocks the fourth box, takes out the fifth, and places the fourth on the third. Having unlocked the fifth (Fig. 68), he takes out the sixth, in which something knocks when shaken.

The assistant gives the performer a tray, on which he places the sixth box and carries it to the audience, where he gives one of the spectators to hold the tray, then unlocks the box and pours things onto the tray that he distributes to the owners. But one thing is missing.

“Don’t worry,” the performer says to the viewer, “what did you give?” To calm you down, I want to offer you a glass of the magic drink.

The assistant brings out a bottle of wine and a glass on a tray. The illusionist pours a glass and places it on a tray, and an assistant on another tray brings out two apples and a knife. The viewer is asked to drink a glass of wine to calm down. He drinks. The performer, offering him an apple, asks:

- Which apple to leave?

He points, the magician takes an apple, a knife and goes to the viewer.

- Let me cut you an apple. - He cuts it, and in the middle there is the missing thing, wrapped in a piece of paper.

“As you can see,” says the performer, “everything ended well.” Everyone got their things back. Goodbye!

Props:

Thief box.

Six beautifully painted boxes, one inside the other, with the fifth without a bottom. The sixth easily fits into the fifth through the hole in the bottom of the box.

Small silk handkerchief.

A packaging box in which postal parcels are sent so large that the largest box can easily fit into it.

Three trays.

A special table with a ladder (hatch) built into it and a lifting mechanism.

Glass for wine.

Bottle with grape wine.

Two fresh apples.

Fruit knife.

Making a box is easy and within the power of every lover (Fig. 79).

Fig. 79

This is the effect it has on the audience. You pick up the closed box and open it by sliding drawer A out of case F. In the drawer you put various things that need to disappear, slide it into the case and turn the box slightly. You pull out the drawer again - there are no more things in it.

You can turn the box over, but there are still no things. They disappeared. And the secret is simple. It's all about the design of the box.

The dimensions of the box depend on your desire; We recommend the usual dimensions for this device: case length 25 cm, width 10 cm and height 8 cm.

The four long sides of the box-case are made of plywood or thin planks, and the fifth side is made of several plywood with a total thickness of 12 mm (Fig. 80); D - view of the wall from the inside of the case; B - section of the wall in the middle; circle I denotes a nail-pin, well rounded at the ends, 5 mm thick and 4 cm long. The pin moves freely along the path made exactly in the middle of the wall. It is shown in Figure 80, D with a dotted line. Hole K measures 8X 15 mm and is 9 mm deep.

For clarity, in Fig. 80, G shows part of the wall. Pin I is shown in section. If you tilt the wall, the pin, moving inside it, will lock the bracket L, which is embedded in the retractable drawer.

Fig. 80

Pin I, with such a rotation of the wall, when the left corner is at the top, should completely leave the hole K and move along the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 80, D, releasing the bracket L. When the wall is tilted in the opposite direction, the pin will enter the other end of its stroke and lock the bracket L.

Cut four wall boards from three-millimeter plywood (Fig. 81). In one of them, make a hole measuring 8x15 mm in the middle and on two boards G, in addition to the same holes, cut another passage for a pin 45 mm long to the right and 10 mm to the left. Now coat board D with glue and place boards G on it. Insert a pin into the narrow longitudinal hole, and carefully clean the passage for it. The stroke width is such that the pin should move freely and fit into the hole easily. Insert the pin, carefully coat the board with glue and place the fourth board E on top. Then place all the glued boards under the press. After the glue has dried, clean these boards for the bottom of the case.

Fig. 81

Now let's start making the box. It consists of two parts: a four-walled box A and a five-walled box B, which moves easily in box A (Fig. 82). On box B you can see a vertical bracket L, which fits into hole K (it is shown in Fig. 80). The box with the bracket must move freely in box A. To prevent it from falling out, fuses are made. Box B needs to be discreetly hidden in box A. For this purpose, edges are made to disguise box B when it is pushed into A. If you look at box A with box B pushed into it, it will seem that you have only one box.

Focus Mystery Package
Fig. 82

When all this is done, attach a handle to drawer A (see Fig. 79).

Now proceed to making the case F, which should be made so that both boxes fit into it freely and without unnecessary friction.

Turning the case right side down slightly will force the pin to move to the right side of the stroke. Insert the drawers into the case; when they fit completely into it, turn the case in the opposite direction - the pin will move to the left. Having placed the case straight, try to pull out drawer A by the handle. In this case, drawer B will remain inside the case and will be hidden from viewers, and the things placed in the box will “disappear”.

You should practice well in using the box. It is necessary to achieve ease of movement: the tilts of the box required to move the pin should seem natural. To prevent items in the box from rattling, tie them in a soft scarf before putting them in the box.

Knowing the principle of operation of the box, you can use it to create your own illusionary device.

If the box is shown clearly and quickly enough, it has a great effect on the audience.

Focus secret:

One of the secrets is clear from the description of the thief box. The second secret lies in the table, which the assistant takes out after the performer removes the first, largest box from the “parcel”.

The diagram of this table is shown in Fig. 83, where A is the top board of the table; B - ladder, in which the latest, sixth box with things is hidden. The ladder diagram is shown separately. This is a small box without a lid, with smooth inner walls. The dimensions of the box - its length and width - are exactly the same as the length and width of the sixth box, which should move freely up and down in it. The letter B denotes the sixth box; 3 is a bottom wall that easily moves inside box B. Spring G is attached at one end inside the box to the bottom, and with the other end it rests against the movable bottom wall 3 and moves it up to the table level. To prevent the spring from raising the bottom wall above the table, a cord is attached to it, passed through the middle of the spring from the top through the bottom of the box. The lace has a limiter G; if you pull it to the bottom with a spring, it will stop its rise. A rivet D is attached to the end of the cord, which serves to delay the rise of the spring when the box is lowered into the box. The top of the movable bottom wall is covered with the same material as the tablecloth on the table.

Focus Mystery Package
Fig. 83

Let us explain the action of the ladder. There is a hole cut in the table, to which box B is firmly attached from below. To charge the box, place the box on the wall-bottom and press it with your finger so that it drops inside the box and is not visible from the audience. Pass a cord from the bottom of the table through its board up through the keyhole-shaped hole E, and attach a rivet D to the cord. It, being in the narrow part of the hole, should hold the spring in such a position that the box is level with the tablecloth. The box needs to be covered with a piece of material cut from the tablecloth. This way it will be noticeable to the audience.

After adjusting the spring tension, fasten the lace to the rivet L, which guides it into the narrow end of the slot E (Fig. 83).

If you now touch the rivet with your hand and move it to the left, in the direction of the arrow, it will fall into the hole and, coming out of the table board, will release the spring G, which will immediately lift the box up. The box will come out of drawer B and its bottom will be at the level of the tablecloth. Limiter G will stop further rise of the ladder at this moment. This is how the table works.

The third secret of this trick lies in the fifth box without a bottom. A sixth box with things easily fits into it from below. The diagram of the fifth box A is shown in Fig. 84.

Focus Mystery Package
Fig. 84

You can see how the sixth box B is half inserted into it. The lower ribs of the walls of the fifth box are rounded from the inside and well sanded: this will make it easier for the sixth box to slide.

Now let's trace the work of the fifth and sixth boxes. The sixth is loaded into the table ladder; the rivet is inserted into hole E (see Fig. 83). Having taken the fifth box out of the “parcel”, the performer, carefully so that the audience does not notice that it has no bottom, places it with his left hand exactly on the opening of the ladder, and with his right hand lowers it by the rivet D. The sixth box will immediately rise and go inside the fifth. You should hold the last one well with your left hand, otherwise it will jump up along with the sixth and reveal our whole secret.

When the performer feels that the sixth box has gone inside the fifth, he unlocks the fifth and, opening the lid, quietly removes a piece of material from the sixth box. Then, holding the fifth box with his left hand, he takes out the sixth from it with his right hand, leaving the fifth on the ladder.

Finally, the last secret: choosing an apple and the appearance of the “missing” thing in it. In one of the apples, with a sharp narrow knife, a round (not all the way through) recess is cut out in advance - a “well” - of such a size that you can insert a ring wrapped in parchment paper into it and cover it with the top of the cut out piece of apple. This will make the fruit appear whole.

The assistant holds two apples on a plate, one of which has a ring. The performer asks the spectator, facing him, which apple he wants: right or left. If he pointed correctly (for example, the left one and there is a ring in it), then the illusionist takes it, and if the spectator says “right,” then the performer takes the apple to his right, and the assistant immediately takes away the second apple.

There are many other ways to force apple selection. For example, a magician asks which apple to leave, and if the spectator points to the wrong apple with a ring in it, then he says: “Okay. We’ll leave it, and give us the other one here,” and, taking the apple with the ring, cuts it open and finds a ring there.

Now we will follow the execution of this entire number from start to finish. Pre-prepare the “parcel” by placing five boxes inside one another

Having placed them in a packing box, nail the lid and tie it with twine. This is done in order to give time to the assistant, who, when untying and unpacking the “parcel,” prepares a table with things in the sixth box.

As soon as the illusionist, having placed the thief box on the table, enters into a conversation with the person delivering the “parcel,” the assistant must quickly prepare the table in the same way as just described. It is best to place the thief box close to the place where the assistant is located, who immediately picks it up and takes it backstage. There he takes out a bundle of things from it, selects one ring (or some other thing), puts it aside, and quickly and calmly pours all the other things into the sixth box; at the same time, you need to lock it well with a padlock, otherwise, when they begin to take it out, it will open and get stuck in the fifth box. Then the box is placed on the ladder of the table and, having loaded it, the hole is covered with a piece of tablecloth; the table is brought onto the stage at the moment when the performer removes the first box from the packing box.

The assistant places a table in front of the illusionist, and he immediately goes backstage. There he takes a pre-cut apple and, wrapping the prepared ring in paper, embeds it in the apple, which he places on a plate along with the second whole apple, then takes them out and places them on the table.

At this time, the illusionist takes out the boxes and places them on the table. As soon as the sixth one is taken out, the assistant quickly takes the table away and, taking the second tray, gives it to the performer. He pours things from the last box onto him. Things are handed out to the audience. As soon as the magician begins to calm down the spectator who was missing something, the assistant takes a plate of apples and stands with it near the table. We have described the choice of apple.

It remains only to give some instructions for the manufacture of equipment. Boxes begin to be made from the smallest. They are made from plywood or thin dry boards. First, glue the entire box of six planks together. Then they clean and saw off the lid. It is not recommended to make the lid separately from the box, as it will be difficult to fit.

The best dimensions for the sixth box are: width 6 cm, length 9 and height 4 cm. A fifth is made along the sixth so that it fits freely into the previous one. The fifth, as you remember, has no bottom. Then make everything else. Having prepared the boxes, paint them inside with a strongly diluted stain or black paint, and make hinges for the lids and locks. Simple hooks can be made, but internal small clasps or latches are preferable.

Then, on top of the lids, attach folding half-rings-loops, by which the boxes can be removed. After this, proceed to carefully priming and painting the boxes. We have described everything, all that remains is to add that you can do without a spring ladder and not spoil the table by cutting through it.

Select plywood of exactly the same shape and size along the top board of the table (if you have one). Cut a hole in it into which the sixth box would freely pass, and attach a small drawer to the cutout; this box should also easily fit into it. You will end up with a plywood disk with a drawer. Place it on a table and support it with three or four pieces of wood to prevent it from wobbling. All this can be easily attached to the table top. Then take some bright, patterned material and make a tablecloth out of it on your plywood. Then glue the material to the plywood and use a razor blade to carefully cut out the hole in the box (you will place the cut piece on the box to disguise it). Now you have a simple and reliable ladder ready. Having loaded the sixth box into it, you place the fifth one on the hole and, having unlocked it and opened the lid, freely remove the sixth one from your box, but it will seem to the audience that you are taking it out of the fifth box.

The height of the device is no more than 5 cm; it can be placed on a table, which does not seem very high.
