As you know, areas covered by reliable cellular communication are adjacent to areas in which communication is not guaranteed. This usually happens because, due to the terrain, the direct wave is sharply weakened and the electromagnetic field in the resulting radio shadow is formed by reflected rays. Passing different paths and shifting in phase, they create a very complex interference pattern in this space. The field strength in the radio shadow changes very sharply, and local maxima can reach a level at which communication is quite possible.

Under real conditions, it is impossible to predict either the location of local maxima or the field strength in them. However, they can be detected experimentally: it is at these points that the largest number of "cubes" appear on the cell phone display. Such a maximum can also be found inside the building, but it will most likely be small. It is better to look for a field strength peak sufficient for communication outdoors, near the wall facing the nearest base station. Experience shows that such a peak is often located very close to the wall, some 10–20 cm.

By placing the mobile device at the maximum point, you can establish a connection. But it will not be possible to accept the call of a correspondent whose time of appearance is not known. Unless, of course, you do not keep the phone at this point all the time. Essentially, the relationship becomes one-way, as it were.

If you place an antenna with gain, i.e., a directional antenna, at the found point, and connect it to the mobile device with a coaxial cable, the losses in which will be less than the gain of the antenna, then the connection will become more stable and it will be possible not only to make outgoing calls, but also receive calls. In this case, you will have to put up with inconvenience, since the device will be "tied" to the antenna by a cable.

Let us estimate the required gain of the antenna operating in conjunction with a thin coaxial cable PK-50-3-13 3 m long. This cable has an attenuation at a frequency of 1000 MHz 0,65 dB / m, at a frequency of 1800 MHz - 0,87 dB / m. Obviously, 3-0,87 - 2,6 dB would be enough. In other words, to compensate for losses in the cable, there is no need to purchase an expensive antenna with a gain of 10 ... 15 dB (a significant part of these decibels is "consumed" in its own 10-meter cable).

A well-known desktop television log-periodic antenna of the decimeter range can serve as a suitable antenna for these purposes, if all its elements are shortened by half (the inter-element distances remain the same). If there is a choice, then the antenna of the previous design should be preferred - with solid-cast vibrator cloths.

The antenna is set in a vertically polarized signal orientation (in the vertical plane) at the point found by the phone, but the final position needs to be clarified. An adapter (adapter) is included in the telephone's antenna jack, to which, in turn, an antenna cable is connected through the necessary high-frequency connectors. By gradually moving the antenna, they find its position, which corresponds to the maximum number of "cubes" on the indicator of the received phone signal. This should be done slowly, since the information on the indicator is updated with some delay.

When installing the antenna outdoors, it can be completely enclosed in a plastic bag to protect it from moisture. The small size of the antenna allows this to be done.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Keychain activates the immune system 14.07.2012

In search of a flu vaccine, researchers at San Diego State University and the University of Nebraska have created an artificial protein that activates the body's immune system just two hours after injection.

Initially, scientists thought that the EP67 protein would be an adjunct to allowing the vaccine to boost the immune response. Then it turned out that he could work independently, and in some respects better than the vaccine itself.

"The flu virus is very insidious," says Joy Phillips of San Diego, who, along with colleague Sam Sanderson, published the results of the study in the public scientific library journal PLoS ONE. "It hides from the immune system skillfully for several days until symptoms of the disease appear. Our research has shown that injecting EP67 into the body within 24 hours of infection activates the immune response to a threat almost instantly, before you feel sick."

The peculiarity of the EP67 protein is that it is not designed for any particular strain of the influenza virus, but simply activates the immune system. According to Phillips, the protein could have dealt with both SARS and the 1 H1N2009 virus epidemic. In her opinion, he is able to defeat a respiratory disease or a fungal infection, the main thing is to feel the threat in time and introduce protein into the body. So far, EP67 has only been tested on mice infected with the common flu. Animals that were injected in the first 24 hours after infection, in contrast to the control group, had the flu in a very weak form.

The degree of mouse disease is determined by weight loss. Usually, having caught the flu, the mouse loses about 20% of its body weight - and this is exactly how the representatives of the control group "behaved". In turn, after the injection of EP67, the animals "lost" only 6%. In addition, it is very important that mice that received a lethal dose of the virus and then EP67 did not die.
