From a piece of flat cable, it is not difficult to make an inductor of several microhenry, which is easy to calculate and convenient to mount on a printed circuit board. This design is intermediate between a conventional coil of coils of wire and a printed coil. Because the ribbon cable coil is three dimensional, it provides more inductance for a given board area than a printed coil. In addition, the flat cable reel is easier to manufacture and adjust.
On fig. 1 shows how a flat cable is bent into a semicircle and soldered into a printed circuit board. Thanks to the connecting printed conductors, the cable turns into a multi-turn coil with a D-shaped section.

To form an inductor, a flexible flat cable is mounted on a printed circuit board in such a way that its individual conductors are connected in series and crossed. One coil can be placed inside another to form a transformer, and the individual turns of the coil can be switched. The inductance of such coils is sufficient for their use in high-frequency circuits of radio receivers.
The inductance of such a coil is calculated using the formula for a cylindrical coil, in which the turn radius is replaced by the effective radius of a semicircular turn. The inductance of a single-layer n-turn cylindrical coil with radius A and length l is determined by the following expression:
where a and l are in inches (1 inch = 25,4 mm) and L is in microhenries.
For a D-shaped coil with the dimensions shown in fig. 2, the effective perimeter length C is equal to the sum of the cable lengths B and the distance between them.

The figure indicates the dimensions given in the text. A flat cable contains a certain number of turns per centimeter of width (coil length), so n and l are equivalent.
