Relay - this is a device for automatic switching of electrical circuits by a signal from the outside (English Relay - change, relay race, road station where horses were replaced; French relais, from relay - change, replace).

Composition

Any relay device, like a relay for switching electrical circuits, consists of two main parts:

  • relay element (with two states of stable equilibrium);
  • groups of electrical contacts that close (or open) when the state of the relay element changes.

Classification

On method of connection to the main electrical circuit protection relays are divided into:

  • primary, connected directly to the main electrical circuit;
  • secondary, connected via inductive or capacitive coupling.

On the method of influencing the disconnecting electrical installation relay devices are divided into two groups:

  • relay of direct action (directly affect the disconnecting device);
  • relay of indirect action (act through an intermediate element).

On purpose of relays are divided into two groups:

  • measuring, designed to operate with a certain accuracy at a predetermined value of the influencing quantity within the continuous range of its change;
  • logical, designed to operate or return with a discrete change in the influencing value.

Measuring relays, designed to operate at values of the influencing quantity greater than the specified one, are called maximum relays, with values of the influencing quantity less than the specified one, - minimum relay.

On type of influencing quantity measuring relays are divided into the following groups:

  • current relay (influencing value - current);
  • voltage relay (influencing value - voltage);
  • power relay (influencing value - the product of current, voltage and the sinusoidal function of the angle between them);
  • phase shift relay (influencing quantity - angle between input vector quantities);
  • power direction relay (influencing value - the angle between the input vector quantities of current and voltage);
  • resistance relay (influencing value - the ratio of voltage to current, expressed in complex form);
  • relay of symmetrical components (influencing value - symmetrical components of current and voltage or their combination);
  • frequency relay (influencing value - frequency of alternating current).

A measuring relay that performs the functions of several relays united by a logical connection is called combined.

In addition to measuring relays in protection devices, logic relays. These relays are:

  • intermediate relays designed to expand the functions of other relays;
  • indicator relays designed to indicate the operation of other relays;
  • time relays designed to operate with an adjustable time delay having a given accuracy;
  • delayed relay designed to trip or reset with a specially designed delay.

According to the principle of operation of the protection relay are divided into the following groups:

  • electromagnetic relays (the work is based on the effect of the magnetic field of the current flowed around the winding on the ferromagnetic armature);
  • polarized relays (electromagnetic relay with an auxiliary polarizing magnetic field);
  • magnetoelectric relays (work is based on the interaction of a permanent magnet and a current-blown relay winding);
  • induction relays (work is based on the interaction of magnetic fields of fixed windings with magnetic fields of currents induced in a moving element);
  • semiconductor relays (the work is based on the use of the properties of semiconductor devices).

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Control of phonons with photons of light 02.10.2017

A group of researchers from the University of Vienna, Austria, and the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, have developed a new method that makes it possible to measure and control certain parameters of sound vibration quanta, phonons, using light photons. This method can become the basis for new types of information storage and processing devices, on the basis of which quantum computers and communication systems will be built.

Scientists have long noticed that phonons exhibit particle-like behavior, which is why they were classified as quasiparticles. Moreover, the immaterial nature of phonons makes it possible to use them as a bridge between the world of classical physics and the quantum world. But in order to be able to use phonons for this purpose, it is necessary to be able not only to obtain them, but also to measure and control their parameters, which are responsible for their quantum state.

The new method developed by scientists is based on pulses of high-energy blue light, illuminating the so-called silicon optomechanical crystal, which has a certain shape. Under the influence of the energy of blue light photons, the crystal begins to vibrate in a special way and phonons appear in its medium. And to interact with these phonons, scientists use pulses of low-energy red light. Red light photons interact with phonons without affecting their quantum state, some of them are reflected back and captured by the interferometer sensors, which measure all the main parameters of these photons.

The information carried by the photons of the reflected red light contains information about the state of the phonons inside the crystal. The data collected by scientists showed that some phonons in a crystal obey the laws of quantum mechanics to a greater extent than the laws of classical physics, i.e. are quantum particles that can be used in various quantum technologies.

During the research, scientists have demonstrated that due to the quantum nature of light photons and some phonons inside the crystal, the new technology can be used to store quantum information. And matrices of silicon resonator crystals can be placed directly on a quantum processor chip or on a separate quantum memory chip of a sufficiently large volume, the presence of which can significantly expand the capabilities of quantum computing systems.
