For proper operation, three-phase electrical equipment must be connected to the network, observing a certain phase sequence. If the network wires are not marked, a special device, a phase indicator, will help to do this.

Industrially produced phase indicators of the induction type I-517 or FU-2 operate similarly to asynchronous electric motors. However, the presence of rotating parts makes them complex in design and inconvenient to use. There are known phase indicators based on other principles.

A diagram of a simple phase indicator is shown in fig. 1. It allows you to determine the order of the phases in three-phase power networks with a neutral wire, to which the terminal XT3 of the device is connected, and the terminals XT1 and XT2 are connected to two of the three phase wires.

Simple phase indicator

Assume that the voltage applied to terminal XT1 is 120° out of phase with the voltage applied to terminal XT2. This situation corresponds to the graphs in Fig. 2.

Simple phase indicator

Thanks to the diode VD1, the current Iue in the control electrode circuit of the thyristor VS1 flows only during positive half-cycles of the voltage at the XT2 terminal. At the moment t1, when the voltage at the terminal XT1 and the anode of the thyristor becomes positive, the latter opens and remains open until the end of the half-cycle (time t2). The value of the resistor R1 is chosen in such a way that the lamp HL1 glows in full heat, signaling that the phase order corresponds to the marking of the terminals (XT2 - "A", XT1 - "B", the phase remaining unconnected is "C").

If the phase wires are connected to the device in the reverse order ("A" - to XT1, "B" - to XT2), the current phase of the thyristor control electrode lags 120 ° from the phase of the anode voltage (Fig. 3). Now the thyristor opens at time t3 and closes at time t4. The average value of the current flowing through the HL1 lamp is much less than in the previous case, so it glows very weakly or does not glow at all. The intervals during which current flows through the lamp HL1, in fig. 2 and 3 are shaded.

Simple phase indicator

As VS1, in addition to those indicated in the diagram, thyristors T112-10-5, KU202N are suitable. The KD105V diode can be replaced by any of the KD209 series. HL1 is a 26 V, 0,12 A incandescent lamp, however, another one with a rated current of at least the holding current of the used thyristor is also suitable. It is only necessary to select a resistor R1 of the appropriate rating and power. Resistor selection will also be required if the nominal line voltage in the network differs from 220 V.

Parts of the phase indicator are mounted in a housing made of insulating material of suitable dimensions, on the front panel of which terminals XT1-XT3 and a lampholder HL1 are installed.

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Controlling objects using air currents 04.05.2024

The development of robotics continues to open up new prospects for us in the field of automation and control of various objects. Recently, Finnish scientists presented an innovative approach to controlling humanoid robots using air currents. This method promises to revolutionize the way objects are manipulated and open new horizons in the field of robotics. The idea of controlling objects using air currents is not new, but until recently, implementing such concepts remained a challenge. Finnish researchers have developed an innovative method that allows robots to manipulate objects using special air jets as "air fingers". The air flow control algorithm, developed by a team of specialists, is based on a thorough study of the movement of objects in the air flow. The air jet control system, carried out using special motors, allows you to direct objects without resorting to physical ... >>

Purebred dogs get sick no more often than purebred dogs 03.05.2024

Caring for the health of our pets is an important aspect of the life of every dog owner. However, there is a common assumption that purebred dogs are more susceptible to diseases compared to mixed dogs. New research led by researchers at the Texas School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences brings new perspective to this question. A study conducted by the Dog Aging Project (DAP) of more than 27 companion dogs found that purebred and mixed dogs were generally equally likely to experience various diseases. Although some breeds may be more susceptible to certain diseases, the overall diagnosis rate is virtually the same between both groups. The Dog Aging Project's chief veterinarian, Dr. Keith Creevy, notes that there are several well-known diseases that are more common in certain breeds of dogs, which supports the notion that purebred dogs are more susceptible to disease. ... >>

Breaking the record for the length of a quantum communication line 25.04.2022

Chinese scientists have set a new world record for the length of a quantum secure communication line. It was 102,2 km, beating the previous figure of 18 km.

True, in such a network, the transmission speed was very low - 0,54 bits per second, but still sufficient to encrypt text messages and phone calls at a distance of 30 km. The results of the work may eventually lead to the creation of a tamper-proof communication, since any attempt to listen to the quantum line can be instantly detected.

The same research team set the previous record. Now she has improved her network. The improvements allowed them to lengthen the line from 28,3 km to a record 102,2 km.

The experiment shows that direct quantum-safe communication between cities via optical fiber is possible using modern technologies.
