And the eternal battle! Rest only in our dreams

Blok A.A.
Blok A.A.

Phraseologism: And the eternal battle! Rest only in our dreams.

Meaning: 1. The call to accept life as it is - as a constant struggle with circumstances, with oneself. 2. Things require action, rest, no time to calm down (jokingly).

Origin: From the poem "On the Kulikovo Field" (1908) by Alexander Alexandrovich Blok (1880-1921).

Random phraseology:

Ultimate weapon.

Meaning:

A weapon (power) against which there is no protection.

Origin:

For the first time, this expression was introduced into wide circulation by Hitler's propaganda on the eve of the collapse of Nazi Germany in order to raise the spirit of the army and the population. This was due to the work on the creation of atomic weapons, which were carried out at that time in the Third Reich. After the war, the expression began to be actively used in England and the USA - Absolut Weapon. This began with the book by American political scientists Frederick Dunn (b. 1893-?) and Bernard Brody (b. 1910-?) "The Ultimate Weapon: Atomic Energy and World Order" (1946). The expression gained wide popularity after a short story (1953, Russian translation -1960) by the American science fiction writer Robert Sheckley was published under that title.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Huge unknown lake found under Antarctica 01.05.2016

Antarctic ice hides under itself an unknown lake 100 km long.

Such subglacial lakes are of great interest to science, as they may harbor unique forms of life, locked in isolation from the rest of the world for millions of years. Although not larger than Lake Vostok (Vostok is 240 km long and 60 km wide), the new lake is much closer to the research stations and will be easier to approach and study in detail, says Martin Sigert, a member of the team that discovered new geographical feature.

The guess about the existence of the lake is based on satellite images, where scientists have identified grooves on the surface of the ice that exactly match those observed above the already known subglacial lakes and channels. "We saw these strange lines on the surface and from them we suggested that there are massive channels 1000 km long, as well as a relatively large subglacial lake," Siegert said.

He says that the new lake is about 100 km long and only 10 km wide, shaped more like a ribbon, and the long channels and canyons that emerge from it stretch for 1000 km along the east coast of Antarctica.
