Figure 1 shows a diagram of a detector receiver with an unusual detector, which is the flame of a burning candle. The candle has two metal conductors located in its flame, one above the other. To do this, unbend a couple of paper clips, and fasten them next to the candles.

Candle Flame Detector Radio
Rice. 1. The simplest circuit of a detector receiver

The principle of operation of the detector is based on the fact that inside the flame there is an area called plasma, consisting of ionized gas, which is a good conductor of electricity. It is important that the electrodes are located one above the other, the bottom one in the hottest place of the flame. The detector works on temperature difference. The hottest electrode will emit electrons and become the cathode, the second electrode located higher, in the less hot section of the flame, will act as the anode.

The flame is not only suitable for detecting RF signals, it can also be used as a highly sensitive microphone and broadband sound emitter. Even ancient people noticed that if someone is talking in a quiet room, lit by candles, then the flame always flickers. This is because the flame is susceptible to invisible sound waves.
Rice. 2. A more advanced detector receiver circuit with a detector in the form of a Bunsen burner.

Figure 2 shows a more advanced detector receiver circuit. The use of a Bunsen burner is much more convenient, since it melts and its flame remains at a constant height, unlike a candle. In addition, the burner flame is hotter and easier to regulate. It is necessary to adjust the burner so that the lower electrode glows with a red glow.

Circuit components:

L1 - Antenna coil - 75 turns (180 μH), taps from 15 and 30 turns;

C1 - Variable Capacitor (KPI) - 500 pF;

D1 - Diode - VD1 - Candle detector, two wires in flame;

R1 - Load resistor - 200 kOhm, used only with crystal phones;

C2 - Filter capacitor - 1000 pF, used only with electromagnetic phones;

If the sound frequency is applied to two electrodes installed in the burner flame, the flame will behave as a high-quality sound emitter. The horn voltage must be adjusted to match the resistance of the flame. The flame and its plasma are very similar to vacuum tubes, they also have a high impedance. A step-up transformer can be used to match the impedances. To increase the output power, it is necessary to increase the area of the electrodes.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Ecological packaging from tomato leaves 24.06.2020

Farmers all over the world throw away thousands of tons of tomato stalks every year. But why throw away something that can be recycled and turned into shipping packaging?

With offices in Germany, France and the UK, Zelfo Technology is exploring the packaging materials of the future.

For the wine industry, Zelfo has developed packaging for the transport of bottles made from grape plant waste, which remains in large quantities after harvest. Now the company has turned its attention to tomatoes.

Currently, developments are underway to obtain materials from sedge hay. Sedge grows massively in the Lower Oder Valley National Park, it is periodically mowed, but there is no useful use for the dry remains of vegetation yet.

The processes developed by Zelfo Technology expand the range of cellulosic and lignocellulosic raw material sources to include previously neglected plant materials, and encourage the use of renewable and biodegradable materials as an alternative to plastic-based solutions.
