The global demand for energy for air conditioning and refrigeration is increasing. This is not only due to the increasing need for comfort in developed countries, but also due to the need to store food and medical supplies in warm climate regions, especially in third world countries.

There are three main active cooling methods. First of all, the use of electric compressors, which are today the standard cooling device in Europe. Secondly, the use of absorption air conditioners driven by thermal energy. Both types are used for air conditioning, i.e. cooling water up to 5°C, and freezing below 0°C. There is a third possibility for air conditioning - evaporative cooling. All systems can be powered by solar energy, their additional advantage is the use of absolutely safe working fluids: plain water, saline or ammonia. Possible applications of this technology are not only air conditioning, but also refrigeration for food storage, etc.

The widespread use of compressors leads to an increase in peak electricity demand in the summer, which in some southern countries reaches the maximum load in the electricity supply system. Since most of the electricity

produced by burning fossil fuels, CO2 emissions increase, and this is unacceptable. A more advanced approach is to use solar energy from thermal collectors to power air conditioning systems. This idea is attractive because the required cooling capacity correlates with the amount of solar radiation.

In principle, compressors can be powered by solar energy (using electricity from photovoltaic panels). More promising are absorption coolers that use the heat of solar collectors, since their use leads to the use of environmentally friendly coolers and an increase in the market for solar collectors. There are more absorption coolers on the market today than evaporative cooling systems. Moreover, absorption chillers can be used to retrofit standard air conditioning systems that use chilled water.

In Kuwait, where air conditioning is essential in residential as well as industrial and public buildings, the use of solar energy for air conditioning generated the most intense interest in the 70s and 80s. The main attention of the developers was attracted by the conversion of traditional steam coolers for use with water heated by the Sun to a temperature of about 100°C. Photovoltaic systems have also been considered, which produce the electricity needed to run a conventional compression air conditioner.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Vertiv Edge Lithium-Ion UPS 18.10.2021

Vertiv announced the launch of single-phase uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) with lithium-ion batteries.

With lower maintenance requirements, Li-ion batteries can be used where IT support is limited. Compared to valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries, Lithium-Ion batteries last up to 3 times longer, reducing the total cost of ownership. In addition, they operate more efficiently at higher temperatures, are smaller and lighter in size, and provide longer run times than the VRLA batteries used for UPSs of this capacity.

The Vertiv Edge Lithium Ion UPS family provides up to 10 minutes of backup power at full load versus 4-5 minutes for standard VRLA UPSs.

The Lithium-Ion Vertiv Edge UPS is ideal for edge computing, healthcare, banking, education, retail and government applications. The solution comes with a standard five-year electronics and battery warranty. The system can be integrated into a Vertiv VR Rack, providing a standardized IT infrastructure solution that can be easily deployed across multiple edge computing sites.

Lithium-Ion Vertiv Edge UPS products are compatible with Vertiv Power Insight software, which can be downloaded free of charge from the manufacturer's website. Vertiv Power Insight allows users to monitor up to 100 Rack Power Distribution Units (rPDUs) and UPS systems with power outage protection for individual and virtual servers. The updated Vertiv Power Insight solution includes the VMware vCenter plug-in to optimize power management and availability.
