Newly declassified US government papers show that in the 50s the authorities regularly warned Kodak and other manufacturers of light-sensitive materials about impending nuclear tests so that the radioactive fallout would not illuminate the firms' products. Of particular interest to this report is the fact that iodine-131 is considered the most dangerous of the falling out radionuclides for photographic materials, which is also dangerous for humans: it causes thyroid cancer. Doctors estimate that between 1951 and 1958, nuclear testing in the United States caused between 10 and 75 extra cases of thyroid cancer. But the population was not warned about the explosions. And Kodak noticed the haze on his tapes in time and threatened to sue the government.

Measurements have shown that the air in the Paris metro is six times more saturated with microscopic dust particles than the air in the streets of the French capital. Particles of iron, manganese, aluminum, nickel and silicon predominate. These are products of abrasion of rails, wheels and brake pads of trains. The metro management intends to increase ventilation at the stations and more often launch special cars with vacuum cleaners.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Solar panels are thinner than cobwebs 19.04.2012

Scientists have developed flexible solar panels with a thickness of about 1,9 micrometers.
Austrian and Japanese researchers have unveiled solar panels thinner than cobwebs and so flexible that they can be wrapped around a human hair.

The new technology opens up the possibility of creating thin-film devices with electrodes only about 1,9 micrometers thick - that's 1/10th the thickness of today's thinnest solar panels.

The ultra-thin solar panel can find the widest application, because its weight is so small that it cannot be felt by a human hand. The thinnest flexible polymer-based solar panels can be embedded in clothing, mobile electronic devices, aircraft, medical sensors for the elderly, space technology, etc.

At the same time, the new panels have the main advantage of traditional ones - scalability. In other words: the larger the solar panel, the more electricity it produces. Also, due to its small thickness and flexibility, the new solar panel is more resistant to fracture and puncture damage. In particular, it can be stretched by 300%, and the panel will continue to work.

The efficiency of converting light into electricity in the new panel is low: about 4,2%. However, for such a technology, this is already an achievement, because modern heavy silicon panels cannot be applied, for example, to a light sail of a yacht. According to the developers, the novelty will go on commercial sale within five years.
