FACTORY TECHNOLOGIES AT HOME - SIMPLE RECIPES
Italian varnish. Simple recipes and tips Directory / Factory technology at home - simple recipes Under Italian varnish imply, as you know, a transparent oil varnish covering the stringed instruments of Amati, Guarneri, Stradivari and other Italian masters. The recipe for the composition of this lacquer was lost around 1770. Since that time, violins and, in general, all stringed instruments have been covered with alcohol lacquers and very rarely with dark brown oil lacquers. In view of this, we consider it useful to give a recipe for an Italian varnish created by the famous Russian violin maker A. Leman. Before making the primer, you need to take care of the coloring of the tree. Well-sanded wood is covered with an aqueous solution of brown sepia paint (a liquid extracted from cuttlefish). When the paint, applied with a very moderately wide brush, is dry, the wood is sanded with very fine flint paper and covered with a colorless, quick-drying oil varnish. Then the wood is again polished with the same fine flint paper, but this time with wood oil, after which it is wiped dry with a clean cloth and covered with a round soft brush with colored varnish, which dries very quickly, so that in a day it is already suitable for grinding with flint paper with oil or water. Colored varnish is made up of colorless (it is best to take amber in oil with strong drying), to which well-erased paints are mixed in tubes: brown, red and yellow. To cover a violin, 2 tablespoons of varnish is enough, and no more than 2 coffee beans of paint. The following paints can be used: Indian and Japanese yellow, Robert No. 7 varnish, brown varnish, asphalt and scratch varnish. It is best to make colored varnish on a silver platter. First, the paint is released from the tube, it is thoroughly rubbed with a glass pestle, the varnish is added and the varnish is thoroughly mixed with the paint. Then, taking a round brush, slowly apply varnish to the tree. The varnish immediately dries up, and therefore should not be brushed over one place more than 2-3 times. Beware of grounding with glue and alcohol varnish, which goes too deep into the wood and greatly affects the sharpness of the sound of the instrument. A fast-drying oil varnish, on the other hand, hardly enters the wood and forms a primer that does not crack or peel like alcohol. After varnishing, the brushes should immediately be rinsed in kerosene and then rinsed with soapy water. It remains to be noted that the coating of a significant number of new and old stringed instruments with Italian Lehmann lacquer gave very good results. Author: Korolev V.A.
