A diamond glass cutter cuts window glass perfectly, but it is not so easy to use it correctly. Unfortunately, skills come only when a dozen or two glasses are irreparably damaged, and even then an accurate cut does not always come out. To prevent this from happening, during the cutting process, it is necessary to constantly hold the tool perpendicular to the glass. The pressing force on the tool should be such that the diamond leaves behind an even, thin, barely noticeable line when moving. If the pressing force is high, then a wide scratch and a coating of glass dust are formed, as the glaziers say, the diamond is "barite". With insufficient pressure on the tool, scratches do not work at all.

I have developed a device that ensures that the diamond is perpendicular to the surface of the glass and the straightness of its movement. It remains only to monitor the force of pressing on the glass cutter.

The table is sawn out of chipboard. Its left and bottom sides must be strictly straight and perpendicular to each other, since they serve as guides. On the same sides, rulers-stops with a section of 2x30 mm from a beech or birch lath are glued, divisions of 5 mm are marked on them. Zero divisions should be at the top of the right angle.

The rail of the T-station is beech or birch, its dimensions are 10x38x500 mm. A recess is made at one end of the rail, where the holder of the glass cutter is attached with countersunk bolts. The starting point for the divisions that need to be applied to the T-square rail is the edge of the table guide rails.

A rail retainer is installed on the guide rail of the T-square. The leather friction linings in the retainer and in the glass cutter holder are fixed with "88" glue. The rail of the T-square should move freely enough in the guide, but without play.

In conclusion, all wooden parts of the fixture are covered with several layers of furniture varnish.

For work, the device is installed on a workbench or a stable table. The glass cutter is inserted into the holder and fixed in it with a screw. The size of the glass to be cut is set according to the divisions printed on the limiting rails of the table. The glass sheet is placed on the table close to the restrictive rulers. By moving the rail towards itself, a risk is drawn on the glass. You can cut glass using the left or bottom side of the table as the base.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Safe genetically modified mosquitoes 05.05.2021

Genetically modified mosquito larvae will be released on the Florida Keys in the southeastern United States. These are male insects, and they do not bite animals and people.

The experiment is part of a program to curb the spread of diseases such as dengue fever, Zika virus and yellow fever.

The mosquitoes will be released over the course of three weeks at six locations, bringing the total to hundreds of millions of larvae. Insects belong to the invasive species of yellow fever mosquitoes. However, they have a special gene that prevents offspring from surviving to adulthood. In this way, it will be possible to control the spread of insects that carry diseases.

These mosquitoes make up only 4% of the population of all mosquitoes in the Florida Keys, but they are the ones that spread dangerous viruses to people and can transmit deadly diseases to animals. Insects have become resistant to traditional methods of control, so new ways have to be found.
