That navigate rivers and lakes it should be remembered that, when the forest is lowered into the river, during the flood it is thrown ashore, and when the water drops, it floats in the middle of the river - it accumulates in the water lowland.

In the daytime, in calm weather, the surface of the water over shallow places - spits, zastrugi, saddles, crests of shoals and underwater middles - is usually more even and lighter than over deep places, where it has a wavy appearance and dark color.

A natural underwater obstacle is found on the surface of the water where the water ripples. If there is not much water above the obstacle, then it overflows through it, and "soars" below. Usually over the obstacle the water is smooth.

The greater the difference in depths, the more sharply the individual places in the channel differ in color and waviness of the water surface.

At night, shallow places have a whitish tint, and deep ones are dark.

Calm-water places are places with a pronounced quiet current or stagnant water.

They usually form behind large sandbars and in backwaters.

The surface of the slug during the day and at night appears darker than the surrounding water surface, and is separated from the stream with a normal or fast flow by a strip of foam.

The water surface changes under the influence of waves formed by winds and moving ships.

On the one hand, they make it difficult to see the reflection of small details of the bottom relief on the surface, and on the other hand, in calm weather, ship waves help to detect the location of spits, sastrugi, etc.

With a strong wind in stormy weather, it is difficult to determine the nature of the bottom topography and the difference in depths.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

The robot chooses fruit 19.03.2013

The unusual software was developed by Indian specialists Shiv Ram Dubey and Anand Singh Jalal. Their automated image processing system very quickly determines the type of fruit, such as distinguishing between oranges and lemons, and also distinguishes varieties of pears, melons, apples and plums. Such a system can be used to sort and pack various fruits and vegetables, as well as to improve the convenience of staff and shoppers.

The system demonstrates a very high accuracy of fruit recognition - up to 99%, regardless of the lighting. This figure was achieved thanks to a very fast comparison of a photograph of an unknown object with a database of all known fruits and vegetables. During the testing of the system, the Indians took photographs of 15 different fruits and vegetables from different angles. Thus, the system was trained to recognize an apple, onion, potato, orange, lime, kiwi, melon, etc. Then the system was offered an unknown fruit or vegetable, the photo of which was compared with the database. Recognition accuracy has reached almost 100%, while no sophisticated equipment for machine sorting is needed - only a video camera and a computer.

The developers are currently working on expanding the capabilities of their algorithm. It is planned that the software will not only be able to distinguish between fruits and vegetables, but also detect damage like mold, rot, etc.
