sand storms - these are heaps of sand up to 2-3 meters high near fences and houses, this is a stopped transport, filled channels, gardens, vineyards. However, the biggest damage is the destruction of the fertile soil layer. In the European part of Russia, dust storms most often occur in March - May.

But of course, much more often such a natural disaster can catch in the desert. A sure sign that a sandstorm is about to begin is a sudden silence. Rustles and sounds disappear with the wind. The desert literally freezes. A sharp feeling of stuffiness is intensified by a state of unconscious anxiety. A small cloud appears on the horizon, which quickly grows and turns into a black-purple cloud. The missing wind rises and very quickly reaches speeds of up to 150-200 km / h.

This is what you need to prepare for in advance. First of all - choose a place. A large stone, tree, ruins will soon be able to protect you from the roaring sand. If it is possible to hide in a car, at the first sign of the wind (when the direction is determined) it must be deployed so that the shelter is on the leeward side.

All your supplies of water and food should be with you. If your only shelter is a stone or a tree, at the first gusts of wind you should lie down on the leeward side and wrap your head in any matter. Breathe through a scarf. A flask of water is recommended to be buried in the sand.

Never try to keep moving. A waste of energy is too much loss in an extreme situation. Sandstorms are usually short-lived. But even if the wind does not subside for two or three days, the best tactic of behavior is to wait out, as in a trench.

The universal logic of protection, by the way, interestingly closes the extremes: the Bedouins in the desert wait out the wind in the sand, just like the Eskimos on the other side of the world in the igloo - a shelter made of snow. The paradoxical solution turns out to be the most effective: protection is created from the source of danger. With a closer look, you can find this technique in other extreme situations. In such as a forest fire, which can be extinguished by oncoming fire, and in psychological and even social storms.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Fujitsu's new architecture will speed up PCs by 10 times 24.10.2016

Fujitsu Laboratories has teamed up with the University of Toronto to develop a new computing architecture. This architecture will be aimed at solving combinatorial optimization problems, which includes finding the best combinations of elements among a huge number of combinations.

The development uses traditional semiconductor technology in combination with flexible configuration schemes and, according to the creators, is able to solve a wider range of problems compared to quantum computing. Fujitsu has already implemented a prototype system on FPGA elements. According to experimental tests, the new architecture is 10 times faster than traditional computer systems in terms of computing speed. Most likely, what is meant here is performance in solving specific combinatorial problems.

The new architecture will make it possible to quickly solve such problems as the rational allocation of resources, improved planning for disaster recovery, the formation of economic policy, and the optimization of the investment portfolio. It will also find application in a variety of decision-making systems.

Fujitsu hopes to present a prototype computing system capable of solving real-world problems by 2018.
