London Heathrow Airport is starting trials of an automatic taxi system to link different airport terminals.

Eighteen electric vehicles with a carrying capacity of 500 kilograms (four passengers with luggage) drive on special reinforced concrete "trays", at the bottom of which landmarks for the autopilot are applied. Driving a taxi is no more difficult than driving an elevator. The passenger, sitting in the trailer, must point his finger at the map of the airport, and the machine will take him to the desired point at a speed of up to 40 kilometers per hour.

So far, the network of concrete paths at Heathrow is 3800 meters long with five stations. If the tests are successful, the fleet of automatic taxis will expand to 400 units, the Heathrow track network will be extended, and by 2011 the system will be extended to other British airports.

Artificial intelligence recognizes silent speech 29.11.2020

American scientists have developed a system consisting of electromyographic sensors that perceive the activity of the facial muscles, and an algorithm that predicts words from the signals of the early stage of articulation and synthesizes them into speech. The technology can be used to help people with speech disorders or improve the capabilities of voice assistants.

A device for recognizing silent speech was invented by specialists from the University of California at Berkeley. They used the approach of "transferring the sound from a vocalized recording to a silent one while preserving the utterance," according to Venture Beat. For subsequent speech generation, they used the WaveNet decoder.

Compared to standard speechless speech programs trained using vocalized electromyography data, the scientists' approach reduced the error rate from 64% to 4% when transcribing sentences from books. In order to spur development in this area, researchers have made nearly 20 hours of EMG data publicly available.

“Digital voiceover of silent speech has a wide range of potential applications,” the article says. “For example, it can be used to create a device similar to a Bluetooth headset that allows you to make telephone conversations without disturbing others. Such a device can also be useful in environments where it's too noisy to talk, or when it's important to keep quiet."

To recognize the speech of those who do not speak English well, Google specialists are developing the Project Euphonia service. To tune the standard algorithm to work with "problem" users, the researchers supplemented the datasets with a small sample representing people with ALS and accents.
