Distances can be approximated by angular magnitude of visible objects, if their linear value is known in advance.

The apparent, or apparent, magnitude of an object depends on the angle of view, or on the angular magnitude of that object, which decreases as it moves away from the eye and increases as it approaches the observer.

If the heights or size of the object P, the size of the improvised object H and the distance to it L are known, then the distance D to the object P can be determined by the formula

D/P=L/N,

whence D=L * P/N

If we take the L / N ratio as a constant value equal to 100, and the value of P as a variable equal to, for example, 3 m, then the distance D will be equal to 100x3 \u300d XNUMX m.

As a constant distance from the observer's eye to the object H, for convenience, take the length of the outstretched arm L, equal to approximately 60 cm.

Then the value of the object H at a constant value of the ratio L / P = 100 should be equal to 60/100 = 0,6 cm = 6 mm, i.e. approximately the width of a faceted or the diameter of a round pencil.

Example. We see a cyclist whose height is assumed to be 1,75 m. We put a pencil horizontally in front of us at arm's length. We see that in its thickness it exactly covers the cyclist. Then the distance to it is 1,75X100=175 m.

If a pencil covers an object with a height of 2 times the average height of a person, then the distance is approximately 2x1,75x100 = 350 m.

If there is no object 100 times smaller than the length of the outstretched arm, you can use random objects that are in a different ratio with the length of the outstretched arm.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Ozmo window cleaner 24.08.2023

Innovative startup Skyline Robotics is set to change the New York skyscraper cleaning landscape with its latest creation, a robot named Ozmo. Ozmo is active in high-rise window cleaning.

At the forefront of technological advancement, this unique robot performs window cleaning tasks on Manhattan's skyscrapers with ease. In his arsenal is an innovative structure similar to a robotic arm equipped with a washing brush. But the real star of the functionality is the LiDAR camera, which allows you to monitor windows and pinpoint their location on a building.

Skyline Robotics President and COO Ross Blume explains that LiDAR creates a XNUMXD map of the building and ensures that the robot is positioned optimally to clean windows as efficiently as possible. The movements of the robot are controlled by an operator on the roof, but remote control is also provided.

The Skyline Robotics team emphasizes that the main goal of Ozmo is not to replace the human factor from cleaning work, but to introduce new technologies and reorient professionals to use modern tools. However, due to the nature of the workflow, Ozmo is able to reduce the need for a large number of workers required to maintain window facades.
