The human neck is a highly sophisticated mechanism that performs many vital functions. However, it is very compact, flexible and surprisingly mobile. All this allows us to consider it one of the most remarkable inventions of Nature. The only thing the neck is not designed for is to withstand the overloads that a person consciously subjects his own head to. The musculoskeletal system of the neck, for example, does not tolerate sharp linear movements and rotational movements of the skull that occur with various kinds of shocks and blows, especially to the chin or the back of the head. Such impacts usually result in concussion or even intracranial injury.

To combat such phenomena, an original helmet design is proposed, which consists of a protective grille, shock-absorbing shell and fastening straps.

The grill protects the head in the front hemisphere and, without touching the chin, falls on the chest. Due to the fact that it works under shock loads, its material must be strong enough. In this case, a bar with a diameter of 5 mm made of steel 65G was used.

The shell repeats the shape of the head and has two cuts in the back of the head for ease of putting on and taking off the helmet. It is made of recycled polyurethane foam (TU 6-05-1872-79). When using in the shell materials with a stiffness coefficient from 10 to 000 Pa, the safety distance between the protective grille and the face (a) is recommended to be 50 mm. Based on this, the remaining linear and angular parameters of the helmet should be as follows: b=000 mm, c=50 mm, R=54 mm, ?=60°, ?=165°, ?=164°, ?=143°.

The protective grille is connected in several places to the shock-absorbing shell. To do this, the rods relating to the parietal, frontal and temporal areas of the shell are wrapped with strips of polyurethane foam and attached with glue REL 5 TU-13 of the Ukrainian SSR 32-81.

The stable position of the helmet on the head is provided by two vertical and four horizontal straps made of woven elastic bands (TU 17-09-326-90). The first ones are pulled together under the chin, the rest - on the back of the head with the help of metal rings (although synthetic Velcro can also be used).

The mass of the helmet with straps and rings is 1410 g. Despite some cumbersome design, it does not in the least interfere with the view and head turns.

How does a helmet work?

When striking from the front, the force applied to the protective grid is redistributed between the head and chest. Therefore, the point around which the head without a helmet would turn at the moment of impact moves from the junction of the cervical and thoracic vertebrae to the lumbar spine. That is, the musculoskeletal system of the abdomen and back, which is anatomically 8-10 times more powerful than the corresponding neck system, resists the impact and the subsequent rotational movement of the upper part of the body. Therefore, the probability of concussion also decreases by the same 8-10 times.

the process of redistribution of the load takes place and in the event of a rear impact, the force applied to the helmet is also transferred to the chest.

In side impacts, the protective grille moves freely parallel to the chest. However, a jaw fracture is completely ruled out, since there is no contact between the chin and the grate in any blows to the head.

The helmet was tested in the training of amateur boxers for two years. Quite often - with a protective vest covering the chest. During this time, not a single knockout or knockdown happened. I think that the helmet could be used not only in boxing, but also where accidental blows to the head are possible, for example, in amateur and professional auto and motor sports.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

liquid metal robot 03.02.2023

Scientists in China have created a shape-shifting work that could resemble one of the characters in the cult film Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The machine has the unique ability to break out of prison on its own. And this is without additional equipment. How is this possible?

A group of scientists led by Chenfeng Pan from the Chinese University of Hong Kong presented their new achievement in a short one-minute video. It features a miniature model of a prison and a small shape-shifting robot behind bars. The device looks like a Lego figure.

The robot is controlled by magnets. At some point, he "opens up" and pours between the bars, getting out of the mini-prison. Finally, it returns to its original state, that is, the solid state. The behavior of the work may be reminiscent of a scene from the movie "Terminator 2: Judgment Day", in which one of the characters "flows" through the bars of the hospital to hunt his victim.

The robot is made of gallium, a metal with a low melting point (approximately 30 degrees C). After connecting with magnetic particles, it can change its state of aggregation: from rigid to liquid. As one of the researchers explains, the material responds to a changing magnetic field, so it can be inductively heated and cause a phase change.

The magnetic particles also force the work to move. When the magnet is removed, the temperature of the gallium drops and becomes equal to the ambient temperature. Thanks to this, the robot again turns into a solid body. Thanks to these unique properties, miniature figures are able to get almost anywhere.
