Sterculia platanophylla (Firmiana simple)

A tree with a round crown, reaching a height of 15 m, with smooth brownish or light yellow bark, of the Sterculiaceae family.

The leaves are alternate, large, up to 35 cm long, dissected into 3-5 pointed lobes, falling in winter.

The flowers are small, greenish-yellow, collected in paniculate apical inflorescences up to 35 cm in size. Sterculia fruits burst before the seeds ripen, the seeds are edible, taste good, oily.

Up to 750 species of plants of the Sterculia family are known, growing mainly in tropical climates.

Range and habitats. The homeland of the plant is the subtropics of southern Japan, Indochina and China.

It was introduced to Russia in 1814 and is not found in the wild. Cultivated as an ornamental tree in the Krasnodar Territory, Crimea, Abkhazia, Adjara, as well as in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

It prefers to grow on sandy soils, but on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus it grows well on powerful alluvial waterproof soils. Mature trees withstand frost down to -15...-20 °C.

Chemical composition. Firmiana simple leaves contain essential oil (0,07%), resinous substances (4-5%), organic acids (up to 2,5%), tannins (up to 4%), polysaccharides (9-10%), ascorbic acid (0,9-1,2%), there are traces of alkaloids. The seeds of the plant contain caffeine, theobromine, traces of other alkaloids, organic acids (6,4%), fatty oil (26%), a lot of choline and betaine.

Sterculia platanophylla (Firmiana simple)

Application in medicine. Firmiana preparations are approved for use as a substitute for cola preparations. As a medicinal raw material, a leaf of firmiana simple (platanophyllum sterculia, lat. Folium Sterculiae platanifoliae) without petioles is used, which is collected at the beginning of flowering, until yellowed leaves appear, and dried in ventilated rooms or dryers at a temperature not exceeding 80 ° C.

Preparations from firmiana have a stimulating effect on the central nervous system and have a cardiotonic effect - they increase the activity of the heart.

Other uses. Firmiana is an ornamental plant.

In countries where the firmiana grows wild, its wood is used as a raw material for obtaining the best grades of paper, and the bark is used as a material for making ropes.

In China, seeds containing caffeine are consumed as a substitute for coffee.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Sterculia platanophylla, or simple firmiana (Firmiana simplex) is a tree that grows in China and other countries of Southeast Asia. Known for its beautiful foliage and colorful flowers, it is also used medicinally for its medicinal properties.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing platanophyllous sterculia:

Cultivation:

  • Soil Selection: Sterculia sycamore prefers fertile soils with good drainage capacity.
  • Lighting: The plant needs bright sunlight, but can grow in partial shade.
  • Planting: Planting is carried out in spring or autumn. Planting depth should be such that the root neck is at ground level. The distance between plants should be about 3-4 meters.
  • Watering: The plant needs regular watering, especially during periods of drought. However, do not flood the plant, as waterlogging can lead to death.
  • Fertilizer: Sterculia sycamore needs regular fertilization. Complex mineral fertilizers are well suited.
  • Pruning: The plant can be pruned to maintain its shape and strengthen its trunk. Pruning is best done in late winter or early spring.

Workpiece:

  • Sterculia platanophylla is used in medicine.
  • Bark, leaves and fruits are used for harvesting.
  • Leaves and bark can be harvested all year round, fruits - in September-October.

Storage:

  • Raw materials must be stored in a dry, cool place in a tightly closed container.
  • The shelf life of leaves and bark is no more than 2 years, fruits - no more than 1 year.

It is important to remember that Sterculia sycamore can be poisonous in large doses, so you should consult your doctor before using it.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Concrete will become stronger 12.04.2020

Concrete is called "artificial stone" for its strength. But can it be made even stronger? Australian scientists can say for sure and answer this question in the affirmative. They have developed a technique that makes traditional concrete 17% stronger, which can be extremely important when pouring critical and large structures. At the same time, the technology is relatively low-cost and has a positive effect on the environment.

The researchers drew attention to how the properties of the concrete mix ... slag. We are talking about steel production waste. It turns out that in the process of smelting steel alloys, a lot of slag remains, which is often not used in any way. On a global scale, we are not talking about 130 tons of steel slag that need to be disposed of. The Australians claim that now construction companies will buy it themselves as a valuable additive in concrete.

The fact is that slags are something like a sponge that absorbs metals until completely saturated. They also absorb water, pre-purifying it of impurities. If such slag is added to the prepared concrete, then its strength increases significantly. The best results are achieved if the water driven through the slag masses has been pre-enriched with phosphorus.

This technology has room for development. It has been established that phosphorus in agriculture plays the role of waste that is harmful to the environment. By using such waste to enrich the water used to soak the slag, several complex problems can be solved at once with minimal cost. Scientists are confident that the development and implementation of such techniques will improve the ecology on Earth.
