In addition to this species, other types of hogweed are used as vegetables in the Caucasus. Young shoots of Heracleum asperum M. B. are edible fresh; leaf petioles of H. pubescens M. B. both raw and salted (replace cucumbers).

Young shoots of N. villosum Fisch. boiled to eliminate their characteristic unpleasant odor, then marinated or fermented. In addition, young shoots serve as a seasoning for borscht, soups, and are fried with scrambled eggs. Stems and leaf petioles of H. duke Fisch. eat, having previously cleared the skin.

Previously, sugar was extracted from the stems of this species and vodka was driven.

Common hogweed (bear paw)

The plant is common in Kamchatka and is called "uchkuy" or "inchkou" there.

Young shoots of N. dissectum Ldb., common in Siberia, the Far East and Central Asia, can be eaten raw (having previously peeled them), and can also be pickled.

In California, the tender leaves and the very sugary and fragrant shoots of H. lanatum Michoux are eaten.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Artificial retina on photocells 27.09.2021

Scientists from the Center for Neuroprosthetics in Lausanne, Switzerland have developed a fundamentally new type of retinal implant.

More than 3 million patients around the world are blind due to disease or damage to the retina. But the existing implants are of little help so far. They restore visual visibility by no more than 20 degrees, and patients with such implants are officially recognized as visually impaired.

Swiss scientists have developed a flexible polymer implant that is also a solar battery. The image is obtained by video cameras located on the glasses. Here everything is as usual. But then everything is new. The image is transmitted wirelessly to the implanted retina. Moreover, the implant area is almost the same as the natural retina.

The implant material was specially made thin and flexible so that it could be inserted into the eye through a very narrow incision. The large area of the implant allows you to dramatically increase the resolution of the image, compared to existing analogues.

The implant does not need power sources. It is powered by natural light. After receiving the image from the cameras, the artificial retina transmits it further to the optic nerve.

Such an implant, according to scientists, will restore more than 40 degrees of visual visibility and increase the resolution of the image several times. This means that a person can already officially be recognized as sighted. But while there are clinical trials.
