In what country could a person sentenced to death escape punishment by outrunning an executioner in a race?

The power of the Ottoman Empire was for a long time reinforced by the absence of civil and internecine wars, not least due to the constant executions of high-ranking officials, which were carried out with the sanction of the ruling Sultan. However, not every death sentence was carried out, due to a curious custom that originated around the 18th century.

A convict from among the highest nobility could challenge the chief executioner and compete in running from the main gate of the Topkapi Palace to the place of public execution in the fish market. In case of victory, the execution was usually canceled and replaced by expulsion from Istanbul.

How dangerous are meteorites?

Approximately 150 meteorites fall to Earth every year. As a rule, they are found quite by accident. Almost the only documented meteorite fall is that compiled by the American Ann Hodges. In 1954, a 4 kg celestial alien broke through the roof of her home in Alabama and fell to the floor in her room.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Sennheiser Evolution Wireless D1 Wireless Microphone System 15.10.2015

Sennheiser has unveiled the new evolution wireless D1 microphone system. The novelty combines high sound quality, reliable transmission and ease of use.

The Sennheiser Evolution Wireless D1 digital microphone system is a godsend for beginner musicians who value high quality and reliable sound transmission. "The D1 just puts you in a creative environment, taking on the complexities of working with wireless systems," says Martin Fischer, product manager at Sennheiser.

The Evolution Wireless D1 is a modern and intelligent system that allows musicians not to be distracted by radio frequency settings during performances. The transmitters and receivers themselves are able to pair with each other and select the cleanest operating frequencies. And with the simultaneous operation of several D1 systems, radio frequencies are automatically parallelized among themselves, occupying one of the 15 possible channels.

The device operates in the 2,4 GHz band, which is freely used for data transmission over the air around the world. Despite the widely used frequency range, Evolution Wireless D1 provides reliable and uninterrupted data transmission. In addition, each radio system has at least two channels, so that if necessary, you can quickly switch to a backup frequency.

The aptX Live codec is responsible for sound quality and wide dynamic range for vocals, speech and musical instruments. And here the system's intelligence also manifests itself: EW D1 itself selects the most correct sensitivity value for microphones or instruments, and the adaptive power mode of the transmitters automatically switches the power depending on the required range.

The Evolution Wireless D1 was also not deprived of sound processing capabilities. On board is a 7-band graphic EQ, low-cut filter, automatic gain control and de-esser. To set up the D1 radio system, a special application for devices based on Apple or Android mobile operating systems is used.
