Blue cyanosis (Greek valerian), Polemonium caeruleum L. Botanical description, range and habitats, chemical composition, use in medicine and industry

Blue cyanosis (Greek valerian)

Synonyms cyanosis azure, cyanosis azure, abuse-grass, harmful grass, etc.

Perennial herbaceous plant up to 75 cm high, cyanotic family (Polemoniaceae).

The rhizome is thick, short, with numerous thin fibrous roots. One or more well-developed erect, hollow, ribbed stems depart from the rhizomes. The leaves are alternate, unpaired, glabrous. Leaflets narrowly lanceolate, linear.

It blooms in June-July with blue flowers collected in terminal paniculate inflorescences. The fruit is a three-celled, multi-seeded pod, ovoid or almost spherical in shape.

Range and habitats. Blue cyanosis is common in the European part of Russia, Western Siberia, in the south-west of Eastern Siberia, in the Caucasus.

Cultivated in Belarus.

It grows in forest and forest-steppe zones on soils rich in humus, in damp places, in swampy meadows and river banks, in sparse forests, their edges, among shrubs, singly or in small groups.

In the year of sowing, it forms a basal rosette of leaves, from the second year of life it begins to bear fruit. It can be cultivated for a long time in one place. Well adapted to cold climates.

Blue cyanosis (Greek valerian)

Chemical composition. Rhizomes and roots contain 20-30% triterpene pentacyclic saponins of the beta-amyrin group (polemonosides), the aglycones of which are represented mainly by esters of highly hydroxylated triterpene alcohols of longispiogenol (I), AR1-barrigenol (II), R1-barrigenol (III), camelliagenin E (IV), resins, organic acids (1,28%), traces of essential oil.

Application in medicine. As a medicinal raw material, a rhizome with blue cyanosis roots (lat. Rhizoma cum radicibus Polemonii) is used, which is harvested in autumn or early spring, cleaned from the aerial part, washed from the ground and dried.

Preparations from roots and rhizomes in the form of infusion or decoction and in the form of dry extract tablets are used in medicine as an expectorant for respiratory diseases, especially for chronic bronchitis, and as a sedative.

Acts 8-10 times stronger than valerian. In combination with marsh cudweed, it is used in the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers.

Blue cyanosis (Greek valerian)

Other uses. Good summer honey plant (one of the main taiga honey plants in Siberia) and good pollen. In terms of sugar, the productivity of nectar of cyanosis crops is 184 kg/ha. Honey productivity in the Kemerovo region is 70 kg/ha, in the Tomsk region - over 100 kg/ha. According to M. M. Glukhov, the honey productivity of the plant is 200 kg/ha, according to T. N. Balabanova - 75-105 kg/ha. One flower accumulates up to 0,280 mg of sugar. On sunny days, up to 1 bees can be counted per 2 m35. Pollen productivity reaches 315 kg/ha. High pollen productivity and average honey productivity make cyanosis an important crop in the nectar conveyor system. When creating a continuous nectar-bearing conveyor, it is advisable to combine crops with crops of fennel polygon. At the same time, they continuously bloom for about 120 days.

Used in ornamental gardening.

Blue cyanosis (Greek valerian)

Decoction of cyanosis (Decoctum radicis Polemonii coerulei). Dry cyanosis roots are prepared as follows, crushed to a size of no more than 3 mm, placed in a porcelain or enameled vessel, poured with water at room temperature at the rate of 6 g per 200 ml, closed with a lid, heated in a boiling water bath for 30 minutes, cooled for 10 min, filter and add the missing amount of boiling water.

The decoction can be stored for 3-4 days in a dark, cool place.

For peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum with normal and reduced acidity and for cholecystitis, a mixture of cyanosis roots is used - 25 g, St. John's wort - 25 g, wild rose - 50 g, boiling water - 1,5 l. Infuse for 5-6 hours, strain and take 1 tablespoon 4-5 times a day after meals.

For children, you can prepare the same composition of the mixture with sugar syrup to taste.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

solar mega power plant 20.10.2013

In the Arizona desert near Phoenix, industrial tests of the most powerful solar power plant Solana have ended.

Solana is one of the largest solar power plants in the world and can deliver up to 280 MW. But, besides this, the power plant has a unique feature: it can accumulate solar heat and generate electricity within 6 hours after sunset. The new heat storage technology is a huge step forward for solar energy, as uneven power generation is one of the main disadvantages of solar energy.

The Solana power plant is an array of 2700 parabolic mirrors, the troughs of which occupy a surface of 7,7 square meters. km. Mirrors concentrate sunlight on tubes in which a liquid heat carrier - synthetic oil - circulates. The coolant heated by sunlight enters the steam boilers and heats the water, which, in turn, turns into steam and turns 140-MW turbines.

Solana is equipped with a thermal energy storage system: special containers where heated oil is stored. This allows the production of clean energy at maximum capacity for six hours. In normal operation, the power plant is able to meet the energy needs of consumers during peak hours in the morning and early evening. At present, Solana at its peak capacity can provide energy to about 70000 households. In the future, 4 more similar power plants will appear in Arizona, and the total generated capacity will increase to 750 MW, which is enough to power 185 households.
