field mustard

Annual, stem 10-100 cm tall, erect, angular, branched, covered with horizontally spaced stiff simple hairs, often with reddish-violet spots in the axils of the branches.

Leaves on petioles, which are up to 2-4,5 cm long at the lower ones, 2-5 mm long at the upper ones, or they are almost sessile; all entire, ovate or oblong-ovate, obtuse or shortly pointed, irregularly acutely dentate, 2-9 cm long, 15-55 mm wide; the lower leaves are petiolate, pinnately incised, unevenly serrated along the edge with a rounded blunt upper lobe; the upper ones are sessile, elongated-oval, with a pointed apex.

The inflorescence is an elongated raceme, the racemes are shortened at first (2-3 cm long), corymbose, then lengthening up to 15-30 cm.

Flowers actinomorphic, four-membered. Pedicels 3-5 mm long, thick in fruits, the same length. Sepals 4-7 mm long, linear, strongly deviated; petals are cruciform, yellow, broadly obovate, 9-13 mm long, 3,5-5 mm wide, narrowed into a nail, which is half as long as the plate, twice as long as the sepals.

The fruit is a pod, almost pressed or obliquely upright, cylindrical, sparsely covered with short hard hairs or naked, 3-7 cm long (with a spout), 2,5-3,5 mm wide, consists of two segments: the lower one is elongated cylindrical, opening, multi-seeded (up to 20 seeds), the upper one is elongated into a conical tetrahedral non-opening, usually one-seeded nose 8-17 mm long, separated from the lower segment by a wedge-shaped roller. The pod is woody, glabrous, straw-yellow, on short and thick, obliquely upward directed stalks. Seeds are spherical, dark brown or almost black, about 2 mm in diameter.

field mustard

Flowering in May-June, fruiting in July-August. Maximum fertility - up to 20 seeds. The minimum temperature for seed germination is 000-2 °C, the optimum temperature is 4-14 °C. Fresh seeds germinate poorly due to their dormant period. Seeds germinate from a depth of no more than 20-5 cm, remain viable in the soil for up to 6 years. Seeds remain viable after passing through the digestive tract of animals.

Range - Europe, North Africa, Asia Minor, Iran, Afghanistan, almost all of North America

Common garden weed. However, it has edible leaves, stems, and seeds.

In the Caucasus, field mustard leaves and its non-flowering stems are eaten (after removing the skin from them).

In France, it is used as a spinach plant.

Field mustard, Sinapis arvensis. Tips for growing, harvesting and storing

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Field mustard (Sinapis arvensis) is a type of fast growing plant that can be used as animal feed or as a source of nutritional supplements.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing field mustard:

Cultivation:

  • Field mustard is an annual plant that can be grown in any climate with sufficient sunlight. It prefers light soils with low humus content.
  • Field mustard can be grown from seed in spring or fall. It grows very quickly and in a few weeks you can get a crop. Field mustard plants do not need special care, but require regular watering.
  • After harvesting, leave the roots and remains of the plant in the soil. This will help keep the nutrients in the soil for the next crop.

Workpiece:

  • Field mustard can be used in food supplements, canned food and oil production. It can also be used as animal feed.
  • Harvest field mustard during the flowering period, when it is rich in nutrients.
  • Separate the stems and leaves from the mustard flowers and dry them in the sun. Then grind the plant material and store it in a dry place.

Storage:

  • Field mustard can be stored in a dry place for a long time.
  • Store field mustard in closed containers or bags to avoid exposure to moisture or air.
  • Store field mustard at room temperature and avoid exposing the packaging to direct sunlight.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Butterfly wings cooling 23.02.2020

In order to take off, a butterfly literally needs to warm up: if its muscles are not warm enough, they simply cannot contract at the speed that is needed for flight. Therefore, if the butterfly is too cold - for example, after a cold night - it crawls out into the sun and warms itself. But after all, not only her pectoral muscles are heated, but her whole body, and the wings too, and the wings heat up faster than the muscles. And it may happen that by the time the muscles are ready to take off as they should, the wings will be overheated.

Although the wings of butterflies seem to us inanimate - in the same sense in which bird feathers or our nails are inanimate - they still have areas of living tissue: these are the vessels penetrating the wing, through which the hemolymph (an analogue of blood in insects) flows, and the so-called androconia are groups of specialized scales that evaporate pheromones. Overheating for living areas of the wing would be inopportune. But butterflies have some tricks that allow them to cool their overheated wing.

Researchers from Columbia University, together with colleagues from other scientific centers, developed a special method with which it was possible to evaluate the heat radiation at different points of the butterfly's wing (a conventional infrared camera was not suitable here - it could not even distinguish the heat radiation of the wing from the heat radiation of the background). The new method was tested on 50 species of butterflies, and it turned out that the living areas of their wings are covered with special tubular nanostructures that serve as a kind of radiator; in addition, both vessels and odorous areas carry a thicker layer of chitin, which also helps to dissipate heat.

Some butterflies also showed an additional cooling system: for example, the male pigeons Satyrium caryaevorus and Parrhasius m-album have a vascular structure in their wings that pumps blood through odorous organs - these vessels contract several tens of times per minute. Such a pseudo heart in the wings makes them heavier, but the butterflies are apparently ready to put up with the extra heaviness in the wing, just to keep it from overheating and not letting their own source of pheromones deteriorate.
