Lime, Citrus aurantifolia. Methods of application, origin of the plant, range, botanical description, cultivation

Lime

It is mainly used fresh, as well as for juicing and canning segments.

The lime is native to the Malay Peninsula. For the first time, the industrial lime culture arose in the 70s of the last century on about. Montserrat (from the Lesser Antilles).

Millions of lime trees are cultivated in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Myanmar, Brazil, Venezuela, and West Africa. Limes enter the international market mainly from Mexico, Egypt, India, Cuba and the Antilles.

In the tropical zone, lime is usually cultivated up to a height of 1000 m.

Lime is a small tree or bush from 1,5 to 5,0 m high. The crown is dense, the branches are covered with short spines.

Inflorescences are axillary, with 1-7 flowers, remontant flowering; the fruits are small - 3,5-6 cm in diameter, ovoid, the flesh is greenish, juicy, very sour. The peel is green, yellowish-green or yellow, very thin when fully ripe.

The juice contains 6-8% citric acid, the best varieties have few seeds (0-4). The aroma of lime fruits is different from the aroma of lemons and inferior to it.

Lime occupies one of the last places in terms of resistance to low temperatures, it is damaged at minus 1-2 ° C, it is well adapted to the conditions of a humid tropical climate in which lemon does not bear fruit well, therefore lime is the main sour citrus in the tropics.

Lime

Flowering and fruit ripening occur throughout the year. However, the main flowering is observed with the onset of the rainy season (in May - June).

For the cultivation of lime, areas with a moderately humid climate are best, as the plants are not resistant to drought. At the same time, excessive rainfall often causes massive development of bacterial diseases (citrus canker, etc.), which drastically reduce the productivity and longevity of trees.

In the tropics, the Mexican variety (syn. West Indies) is usually grown, the fruits are small. Known hybrids such as limona (lime x lemon), limequat (lime x kumquat), etc.

Many experts consider lime unpretentious to soil conditions; it can grow on poor sandy and stony soils. However, lime is more sensitive than most citrus crops to unfavorable soil and climatic conditions. The best soils are light loams with deep tillage and good drainage.

The main crop is harvested in August, September and October.

The fruits are stored for 1,5-2 months at a temperature of 8-10 ° C and relative humidity of 85-90%.

Lime

Other lime species include Citrus latifollia Tanaka. Its fruits resemble a lemon, they are large (6-8 cm in diameter), with a thin (1,5 mm) smooth peel. The aroma is weaker than that of a real lime. Usually seedless, the composition of the fruit is similar to real lime.

Fruits of sweet lime (Citrus limettoides Tanaka) do not contain acid, fresh, sugars in juice up to 6%. It is widely used in folk medicine, in particular against malaria.

Lime Rangpur (Citrus bimonia Osbeck.) is used as a rootstock of citrus crops. In a number of countries it is cultivated for its fruits. The fruits are sour, about 5 cm in diameter, the peel is thin, easily separated. The skin and flesh are dark orange. Rangpur lime is characterized by drought resistance, high yield.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

A lime, also known as limetka, is a sweet and sour citrus fruit that is widely used in cooking and drinks.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing limes:

Cultivation:

  • Soil: Kiwifruit prefer loose and well-drained soil that is neutral to slightly acidic. The ideal option would be loam or sandy-clay soil.
  • Lighting: Kiwi loves bright sunlight, so choose a place for him with open access to the sun's rays. It grows well on southern or southwestern slopes.
  • Distance and depth of planting: The distance between plants when planting kiwi should be about 3-4 meters. The planting depth of the root system is approximately 30 cm.
  • Growing: Kiwi fruit can be grown from seeds or cuttings. Cuttings are best taken from healthy and mature plants. When planting cuttings, it is recommended to make a support or trellis to support the plants.
  • Care: Kiwifruit requires regular watering, especially during the dry season. Make sure the soil around the plants stays moist but not waterlogged. It is also recommended to fertilize the plants with organic fertilizers in spring and summer.
  • Pruning: Kiwis need pruning to form a strong and compact crown. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring, before active plant growth begins.
  • Frost Protection: In cold climates, kiwifruit can be vulnerable to frost. To protect the plant from frost, you can use agrofiber or other shelters.

Workpiece:

  • Limes should be harvested when they reach maturity and turn bright green.
  • Fruit can be cut or broken off from a branch.
  • Peeled and pitted limes can be used in dishes, drinks and sauces.

Storage:

  • Fresh limes are best stored at room temperature for up to 7 days.
  • Limes can also be refrigerated in a container with a tight-fitting lid for up to 3 weeks.
  • If you want to keep limes longer, you can freeze them. To do this, cut the fruit into pieces and freeze in a container or bag with a zipper. Frozen limes can be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

flycatcher robot 10.11.2019

Researchers from Purdue University (USA) have developed a new class of soft robots and actuators that, using stored elastic energy, can catch an insect in just 120 milliseconds. The robot moves as fast as the whipping tongue of a chameleon.

To create such a robot, scientists were inspired by nature, namely, reptiles and amphibians: chameleons, salamanders and toads. These creatures use stored elastic energy to launch their sticky tongues at unsuspecting insects. Within one tenth of a second, the tongue of a chameleon or salamander can cover a distance exceeding one and a half body lengths of the animal.

The robot, which resembles a chameleon's tongue, is made of stretchable rubber band-like polymers with internal pneumatic channels that expand when pressure increases. The elastic energy of a robot is conserved by stretching its body in one or more directions during the manufacturing process. The very action of the soft robot looks like this: first, it is compressed as much as possible, twisted into a roll, and then sharply, like a chameleon's tongue, unwinds, increasing its length five times, catches a live fly and returns to its original position. And all this happens in just 120 milliseconds.

The new technology has a number of advantages over other soft robotic systems. Firstly, the new robot can easily grab, hold completely different objects and manipulate them at high speed. Second, it can use the elastic energy stored in its prestressed elastomeric layer to hold objects up to 100 times its weight without consuming any external energy.

“We believed that if we could make robots capable of performing such large amplitude movements at high speed, like chameleons, then many automated tasks could be performed more accurately and much faster,” said Ramses Martinez, assistant professor at the Purdue School of Industrial Engineering and the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at the Purdue University College of Engineering, lead author.
