Blighia (bligia, aki), Blighia sapida. Methods of application, origin of the plant, range, botanical description, cultivation

Blikhiya (bligia, aki)

Blighia (Blighia sapida Koenig) from the Sapindaceae family is an evergreen polygamous tree with a height of 7 to 25 m.

The leaves are large, pinnate, with 3-5 pairs of leaflets. The flowers are small in short axillary racemes.

Blikhia is less demanding on temperature, and 4-5 year old trees are able to withstand short frosts.

The fruits in appearance resemble cola fruits, their size is about 10 cm long and 6 cm wide, oblong in shape, golden in color.

Homeland - the western coast of Africa, where it grows wild in the forests.

The main areas of cultivation are West Africa, as well as Jamaica, where blichia was introduced in the XNUMXth century. In Jamaica, blichia is also found in a feral state in forests.

Blikhiya (bligia, aki)

When ripe, the fruit bursts into 3 parts, and a white wrinkled pulp with thin pink veins becomes visible, black seeds glisten in it. The fruits are tasty and nutritious, but they are not always safe to eat. The fruits are eaten only when they reach a certain degree of maturity, in all respects ripe, but still a little hard.

Overripe, fallen or damaged fruits can cause poisoning. Unripe fruits cause vomiting due to the presence of hypoglycin A in the fruit membranes.

The fruits are consumed fresh, but in most cases - after cooking, for example, fried. All this allows you to use the fruits of blichia only on the spot.

Aki fruit is poisonous (contains hypoglycine) until it opens naturally. Seeds are always poisonous, in them the concentration of hypoglycine is 2-3 times higher. Only the pulp surrounding the seeds is eaten, the rest of the fruit is not eaten.

The pulp can be eaten raw, but in Jamaica it is usually boiled together with salted pollock or hake - aka fish is considered a national dish. In Africa, ackee pulp is added to soup or fried in oil.

Blichia is propagated by seeds, seedlings begin to bear fruit at the age of 5. Vegetative propagation is used to a limited extent.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

SONY and TOSHIBA disagree on video format 15.06.2005

Talks in Tokyo between Japanese giants Matsushita, Sony and Toshiba about a future unified next-generation DVD format are likely deadlocked.

The talks brought together 230 representatives from 80 Blu-ray companies and 120 delegates from 64 DVD HD companies. The other day (May 16), two separate meetings were held behind closed doors, as a result of which it became clear that, most likely, each manufacturer will continue to go its own way.

Kayoshi Nishitani, senior vice president of Sony, acknowledged that the companies are unable to reach an agreement. Yoshihide Fujii, president and chief executive officer of Toshiba Digital Media Network Co., said that if the merger talks condemned both technologies as equals, everything would be fine. But if Sony insists on a 0,1mm disc format, that's their problem...

Negotiations are still ongoing. HD DVD Promotion Group has confirmed that it is going to launch production this year.
