Ephedra horsetail (mountain ephedra, horsetail ephedra), Ephedra equisetina bunge. Botanical description, habitat and habitats, chemical composition, use in medicine and industry

Ephedra horsetail (mountain ephedra, ephedra horsetail)

A large densely branched shrub up to 1,5 m high, of the horsetail family (Ephedraceae), with one or more woody trunks, upward directed branches and leaves reduced to scales.

The flowers are collected in small spikelets. The fruit is a cone.

Flowering in May-June, fruiting in July-August.

Range and habitats. In nature, the range of the species covers the Caucasus, the Volga regions of the southeast of the European part of Russia, Western Siberia, the mountains of Central Asia, the Eastern Tien Shan, Mongolia and China.

A typical mountain plant, confined mainly to the mountain-steppe, mountain-forest and subalpine belts. It grows on rocky areas, gravel screes and in rock crevices at an altitude of 1000-1800 m above sea level, where it takes root thanks to a powerful root system. Forms sparse, but extensive thickets. Demanding on the world. Able to reproduce vegetatively by dividing the bushes.

Chemical composition. All parts of the plant contain ephedrine and pseudoephedrine.

Ephedra horsetail (mountain ephedra, ephedra horsetail)

Application in medicine. As a medicinal raw material, grass is used - the apical non-lignified parts of the branches - horsetail conifer (lat. Herba Ephedrae equisetinae), which is harvested in early spring and in the summer-autumn period. The herb contains 1,5-3% alkaloids.

Ephedrine hydrochloride and Defedrin preparations are obtained from raw materials, which are used for bronchial asthma, urticaria, hypotension, rhinitis. Ephedrine weakens the effect of drugs and is used for drug poisoning. Ephedrine hydrochloride is part of the complex preparations Teofedrin, Efatin, Solutan.

Other uses. Plays an important role in fixing scree.

The shoots contain up to 11% tannins, which can be used to obtain tannin extracts. A combined technological process for obtaining medical and tanning preparations from the same raw material is possible.

The ashes of the stems of the horsetail conifer in Kazakhstan and Central Asia are occasionally added to chewing tobacco - nasvay.

Horsetail ephedra, also known as mountain ephedra or horsetail ephedra, is a shrubby plant that can grow up to 2-3 meters in height. This plant is often used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat asthma, allergic reactions, and other ailments.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing:

Cultivation:

  • Ephedra horsetail prefers sunny places and well-drained soils.
  • It is recommended to plant the plant in spring or autumn.
  • Propagation occurs through seeds or cuttings.
  • To ensure good growth and development, the plant needs regular watering.

Workpiece:

  • The best time to harvest horsetail ephedra is late summer or early autumn, when the plant contains the most ephedrine.
  • Collection is carried out on a sunny day after the dew has evaporated.
  • Dry ephedra in the shade, with good ventilation.

Storage:

  • Dry leaves or stems can be stored in tightly closed glass or plastic containers.
  • It is recommended to store ephedra in a cool, dry and dark place.
  • Keep ephedra away from children and pets, as it can be hazardous to health if consumed incorrectly.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

quantum spin liquid 22.03.2018

In 1987, Paul W. Anderson, Nobel Laureate in Physics, suggested that the phenomenon of high-temperature superconductivity might be related to an exotic quantum state of matter known as quantum spin liquid. In this state, the magnetic moments of matter particles behave like a liquid, however, such a liquid does not "freeze" even at absolute zero temperature. Such exotic states of matter are considered promising candidates for their use in quantum computing systems, however, until recently, scientists have not been able to obtain a spin-liquid suitable for its use in various quantum technologies.

And only recently, researchers from the Aalto University, Finland, the Brazilian Center for Physics Research (CBPF), the Technical University of Braunschweig and the University of Nagoya, for the first time, managed to create a superconducting quantum spin liquid, the properties of which are as close as possible to the properties of the theoretical fluid predicted by Paul Anderson. And the creation of a quantum spin-liquid became possible thanks to the technology developed at Aalto University to control the properties of some magnetic materials.

Most of the existing high-temperature superconductors are based on copper oxide, in which copper ions form a square crystal lattice, and the magnetic moments of neighboring ions are directed in opposite directions. When this slender crystal structure is broken by changing the oxidation state of copper, the material becomes a superconductor. However, the replacement of ordinary copper ions with ions having an electronic structure of d10 and d0 turned the entire crystalline structure into a quantum spin liquid.

"In the future, the d10/d0 ion exchange method could be applied to many other types of magnetic materials, allowing us to create a range of new materials with unique quantum properties," says Otto Mustonen, a researcher at Aalto University.

To register the fact of creating a quantum spin liquid and determine its properties, scientists used the technology of spin spectroscopy. This technology is based on the interaction of electron-like elementary particles, such as muons, with the material under study. Such a method is able to determine even the weakest magnetic fields that exist in a quantum material.

"In addition to sophisticated and high-quality equipment, this type of research requires the collaboration of physicists, chemists and scientists from other fields," says Professor Maarit Karppinen, "But with the joint efforts of such a multidisciplinary team, we will be able to study the properties of quantum spin- liquids and come close to the practical creation of the so-called topological quantum computer".
