Saksaul

An ordinary birch, or a maple, or a spruce would not even count it for a tree. They would look at him from the height of their green crown and contemptuously say: "Yes, this is some kind of freak."

But in the sandy desert, where the saxaul has a house, he is the king there, and our green beauties there would simply die of thirst, from the unbearable heat for them. They wouldn't even be able to keep their roots in the sand...

In the desert, in the midst of heat and lack of water, even such a freak tree, one and a half to two meters tall, looks like a miracle, and even a whole forest of such trees is a miracle of miracles!

People do not forget their first meeting with him all their lives.

A man was walking through the sands - loose, hot, hopeless - and suddenly: "... A forest of unprecedented trees ... The gnarled, staring trunks watching us looked like the bodies of serpentine fossils, and the hanging green hairs looked like the hair of these monsters .. And the shadow under the trees was not dense - cobweb penumbra ... "

Indeed, saxaul is like that simple-minded scientist from Andersen's fairy tale, who lost his shadow. Yes, and where should she be at the saxaul? The shadow of an ordinary tree is from a thousand of its palm-leaves or from a thousand juicy green needles. But every leaf, every needle evaporates moisture. Here, at the saxaul, the leaves turned into very small, millimeter scales. They tightly fit the thin, flexible shoots that grow every year in green panicles at the ends of its gnarled, iron-hard branches.

In the very dry and hot season - June-July, in order to give even less moisture, so as not to dry out, saxaul sheds a good half of its shoots. They fly around like leaves, cover the foot of the curved, twisted trunks, and the green king of the sands sinks into slumber until better days.

Now, half asleep, he breathes half his strength, and therefore, he eats half. On the remaining green shoots, he half-covered his stomata and already half as much absorbs delicious carbon dioxide from the air with them. But on the other hand, it is half as much and gives water through them.

However, note: nevertheless, he gives up water, and, presumably, with pleasure - evaporating, it pleasantly cools his tender shoots. No, saxaul, of course, is not afraid of the heat, but - how much can you?! The barrel heats up to more than forty degrees! ..

Saksaul

So the saxaul slumbers in the yellow silence of the July desert, and it dreams of better days, and of those that have passed, and of those that are to come. Maybe he remembers the past spring: the good April sun and the cheerful torrential April rains. Then, on each of its shoots, many small whitish flowers bloomed. It was wonderful!..

But a week or two passed - the flowers fell, and summer burst into the desert on a fiery horse. It instantly dried the sands. Rain moisture is preserved only deep underground, where the sun's heat does not penetrate. Do you think this bothered the saxaul? Not at all! Its powerful branched root goes ten meters deep and can extract at least a little moisture from the ground at the most difficult time. In addition, it reliably holds the tree in such unreliable soil as sand.

But maybe the saxaul is dreaming not of the past spring, but of the coming autumn, when the air becomes cooler, the sand cools down and no, no, yes, even timid rain will knock on the trunk? It is by this glorious time, but not earlier, only by the end of September, that its seeds will ripen and fall on the sand. The wind will carry them, and somewhere between the dunes, not hiding from the light and heat, right in the sun, they will sprout small saxaulchiks.

Little trees will rise up that will never grow really big...

This is what the king of the sands saxaul is like, this tree without a shadow, this "freak"! And here you are, birch, maple, spruce, try it!

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Clam Vitamin Bomb 26.07.2020

Cambridge researchers have found a natural way to fortify seafood with nutrients that could out-compete some vitamin capsules on the market.

2 billion people in the world suffer from nutritional deficiencies. Along with the production of "pure" vitamins in the form of tablets and capsules, scientists are constantly looking for ways to enrich food with important elements. Cambridge zoologists have teamed up with Cambridge-based BioBullets to transform bivalve molluscs, the most digestible and healthiest of all animal proteins, into a vitamin bullet.

There is more protein in bivalve mollusks than in beef. In addition, shellfish is the leader among animal products in terms of the content of omega-3 fatty acids and essential minerals to support human life. Raising shellfish is less environmentally damaging than raising livestock and even producing crops such as soybeans and rice. However, the nutrients found in oysters and mussels are not enough to tackle the global food void crisis.

Along with the meat of shellfish, people also eat the intestines of these creatures. This is how the human body receives nutrients that animals consumed at the end of their lives. Scientists from Cambridge have created the world's first microcapsule to deliver nutrients to the intestines of bivalve molluscs in a natural way. The size, shape and buoyancy of the capsules make them attractive to shellfish.

Oysters fed a vitamin capsule contain 100 times more vitamin A and 150 times more vitamin D than regular oysters. "Fortified" oysters are also vastly superior to salmon, one of the best natural sources of these vitamins. Microcapsule-fed clams contain 26 times more vitamin A and 4 times more vitamin D than salmon.

A serving of two "enriched" oysters covers the daily human need for vitamins A and D. Therefore, the creators of the microcapsule are currently establishing contacts with global seafood producers in order to give the world a cheap and effective way to obtain trace elements.

The researchers believe that "fortified" shellfish will be slightly more expensive than regular shellfish, but cheaper than out-of-the-box vitamins, and in countries with nutrient-deficient but inexpensive seafood, people will be able to afford this way of getting vitamins. Thus, scientists hope to improve the health of millions of people, while reducing the harm that meat production causes to the environment.
