Tumbleweed Tumbleweed

Basic scientific information, legends, myths, symbolism

Sort by: Time

Family: Amaranths (Amaranthaceae)

Origin: The species is distributed in Europe, Asia and North America, as well as in some regions of South America and Australia.

Area: Tumbleweed is widely distributed in a variety of soil types, from open sand dunes and roads to fields and vegetable gardens.

Chemical composition: The plant contains saponins, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and manganese.

Economic value: Tumbleweed in agriculture as a weed has no economic value. However, in some regions, the young leaves and shoots of the tumbleweed are used as livestock feed. Also in folk medicine, the plant is used to treat various diseases.

Legends, myths, symbolism: Although this plant does not have a strong symbolism or mythological history, it is sometimes referred to in literature and songs as a symbol of transition or change. Its name "Tumbleweed" is due to the fact that in light winds, its fruits, covered with thorns, can roll along the ground, resembling a toy ball that rolls across the field. In this sense, it can be seen as a symbol of change and moving forward despite obstacles.

Tumbleweed, Kali tragus. Interesting plant facts

Tumbleweed

So it happened - this man first came to the steppe. He walked on a flat road. The hot air was motionless, the smell of dry herbs was stifling... Suddenly the wind blew in my face. Dust shot up from under his feet and curled in escaping spirals, along with rustling fragments of stems, scraps of leaves. And then the man froze, stopped: at his very feet, something round rolled across the road, a ball not a ball ... another followed him, a third rushed further away and to the side, and there a fourth, fifth ... Strange objects bounced, spun, overtook each other. Sometimes, grappling in several, they continued, somersaulting, a swift movement in one large ball.

- Well well!

But the traveler had already taken a breath, he was already smiling, remembering his momentary fright. He understood everything: at last he had a chance to see tumbleweeds, without which the steppe is not a steppe! The man grabbed one runner, lifted him off the ground to take a closer look. Here is the stem. It has several side branches. They curved round downwards. Each of them branches in turn. And thin twigs also bent. It turned out the right, like a wicker, ball, hard and elastic.

“Why,” the traveler thought, “the plant takes on such an unusual shape, like a ball? Why should it become a toy for crazy winds ?!”

We do not know whether this man knew that many and very different green inhabitants of the steppe - kachim, zopnik, camel, walker, goniolimon - form a tumbleweed. Because it is this form - the shape of the ball - that helps them survive in the steppe. During the hot June times, most of them are cheerfully full of yellow, blue, whitish flowers. But after a month, the plants dry up on the vine. Their stem at the base becomes especially fragile. Under the blow of the wind, it breaks off with a bang. And the plant-ball, as if waiting for freedom, impatiently takes off from its place ...

The traveler looked at the steppe marvel with interest. At the ends of the branches, he noticed dry fruit boxes. They were already cracked, opened up, but... remained almost full! It was surprising: after all, the bush had already rolled around the steppe for a long time, jumped and hit it many times, and only a few seeds spilled out! Ah, here's the thing: inside, hairs stick out on the walls of the fruit boxes. It is they who trap the seeds, and when pushed, they fall out neatly, one at a time, dispersing widely across the steppe.

- Yeees!..

Well, if there weren’t such hairs, the bush wouldn’t curl up into a ball, it would stand where it grew up - what then? Then all its seeds would fall nearby and new shoots would crowd in, interfering with each other.

"Look, what a simple and what a cunning thing this tumbleweed is! - thought the traveler. - It's just a ball seeder!" Yes, simple and clever. And only in open steppe expanses, where there are no obstacles for free running, such an adaptation could be developed. It allowed plants to survive here, the seeds of which are not capable of independent flight. We know that in feather grass, for example, each seed is equipped with a special awn-feather, thanks to which the wind can carry it far, far away from the mother bush. Tumbleweed plants have adapted to disperse seeds in their own way.

Tumbleweed, Kali tragus. Tips for growing, harvesting and storing

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Tumbleweed (Kali tragus), also known as cabbage, is an annual plant in the Amaranth family.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing:

Cultivation:

  • Choice of location. Tumbleweed grows in dry and sandy soils. It can also survive in nutrient-poor soils.
  • Sowing. Tumbleweed can be sown in spring or summer. Seeds should be sown to a depth of no more than 1 cm and then well watered.
  • Care. Tumbleweed does not require special care. It is only necessary to regularly water the plants, especially during the heat.
  • Cleaning. Tumbleweed begins to produce a crop 2-3 months after sowing. Harvested plants can be used for seed harvesting or as animal feed.

Workpiece:

  • Collection. Tumbleweed seeds are harvested when they are fully ripe. Seeds ripen within 2-3 months after sowing.
  • Drying. Harvested seeds should be dried in the sun or in a ventilated place for several days.

Storage:

  • Seed storage. Tumbleweed seeds should be stored in a cool and dry place. They can remain viable for up to several years.
  • Plant storage. Harvested plants should be stored in a dry place. They can be used as animal feed or for seed production.

Tumbleweed is a plant that can be used for both seed production and animal feed.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

DNA antenna 18.01.2022

Researchers at the University of Montreal in Canada have used deoxyribose nucleic acid - or DNA, the building blocks of our genetic material - to create the world's smallest antenna. It is designed to track the movement of proteins within the cell, the university said in a press release.

It is reported that the "antenna" formed from DNA can receive and receive signals, but it uses light to do this. Scientists at the University of Montreal used a tiny antenna to track the movement of a squirrel by sending it a light signal.

Depending on the movement of the protein molecule, the antenna transmitted signals of different colors.

At the same time, the response signal could be recorded using a spectrofluorimeter - a device that is commonly used in various scientific laboratories around the world.

Scott Harron, one of the study's authors who created the tiny antenna, noted in a press release that the chemistry of DNA is actually very simple and easy to program.

DNA functions in much the same way as LEGO blocks, so it can be put together in different lengths to optimize new function.
