Agatis Dammara

A species of evergreen gymnosperms of the Araucariaceae family.

Trees about 50 meters high. The trunk reaches 45 cm in width. The bark is reddish-gray in color, the crown is conical in shape, the branches are slightly drooping.

Leaves on petioles 3-8 mm long, leaf blade leathery dark green, thickened at the edges, usually with blunt tips, rarely pointed.

Cones are almost spherical or broadly ovoid, up to 10 cm in size. Seeds are about 12x7 mm in size.

It grows in tropical regions of Asia: in Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia, on the island of Sulawesi and the Moluccas.

It occurs in tropical forests, from sea level to highlands, where it becomes dwarfed at high altitudes.

Agatis Dammara

The stem of the plant contains a resin called dammara, which is widely used in industry and medicine.

The tree is commonly grown as an ornamental and also as a source of timber used in construction.

The plant is cultivated in Indonesia, Malaysia, brought to China, where it is cultivated on plantations in the provinces of Fujian and Guangdong.

Agathis dammara, or ketacolamban, is a tall evergreen tree native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia and Australia.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing agathis dammar:

Cultivation:

  • Agatis dammara requires a warm and humid climate, and can grow in a variety of soils, but prefers fertile and well-drained soils.
  • Propagation is by cuttings or seeds. It is better to take cuttings in early summer and root in moist soil at a temperature of 22-24 ° C. Seeds are best planted in spring, sowing depth should be no more than 2 cm. Plants need bright sunlight, but can survive in partial shade.
  • Regular feeding of a tree can help speed up its growth.

Workpiece:

  • Agatis dammar resin is used in the paint and varnish industry and pharmaceuticals. To collect the resin, an incision must be made in the bark of the tree to start the extraction of the resin.
  • The leaves of the tree are also used in traditional medicine to treat coughs and other respiratory ailments. Leaves can be harvested dry or fresh.

Storage:

  • Agatis dammar resin should be stored in a dry and cool place in an airtight container.
  • Dried tree leaves can be stored in paper bags or glass or plastic containers in a cool, dry and dark place.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

0,34nm gate transistor 19.03.2022

A group of Chinese scientists came up with an unusual transistor design. Thanks to their unique design, they made the world's smallest transistor with a gate length of just 0,34 nm. Further reduction of the gate length using traditional technical processes is in principle impossible, because we are talking about a gate length equal to the width of one carbon atom.

The scientists called the new transistor a vertical sidewall transistor. The idea of a vertical arrangement of the transistor channel, by the way, was also recently implemented by Samsung and IBM, which we once talked about. But the Chinese developers were able to surprise. The gate in the new transistor is a slice of one atomic layer of graphene, and its thickness, as you know, is equal to the thickness of one carbon atom, or about 0,34 nm. And the most amazing thing is that no modern lithographic scanners are needed to make a shutter of this length. All the necessary fine components are created using vacuum deposition processes.

How does this happen? A conventional silicon substrate is taken. She plays the role of foundation. Silicon does not participate in electrical processes in any way, although, theoretically, it can protect against leakage currents. Two steps are made on the silicon layer from an alloy of titanium and palladium. A sheet of graphene is placed on the top step. It doesn't need precision. It will be achieved later by conventional etching. A layer of aluminum pre-oxidized in air is placed on a graphene sheet. The oxide serves as an insulator for the structure. Therefore, aluminum does not participate in the electrical circuit of the transistor, although there is no complete clarity in the purpose of the aluminum layer.

The aluminum stacking field is subjected to conventional etching, during which the graphene edge is exposed, including the cut of the aluminum lining. This forms a graphene gate 0,34 nm long with a precisely adjusted topology. Just above it, a cut of aluminum is exposed, which can already form an electrical connection with the gate, but not a direct one. At this stage, the thinnest layer of hafnium oxide, an insulator, is applied to both steps and to the side wall, which excludes the electrical connection of the gate with the rest of the transistor structure and, in particular, with the transistor channel.

A very thin layer of molybdenum dioxide (MoS2) close to the atomic thickness is applied over the hafnium oxide dielectric. Molybdenum dioxide is a semiconductor, it plays the role of a transistor channel, which is controlled by a gate in the form of a slice of graphene. This results in a structure about two atoms thick, with a gate one atom long. The drain and source of the transistor are metal contacts deposited on molybdenum dioxide. An elegant solution to the problem of Moore's law and, apparently, this will be the end of its action, if we talk about traditional technical processes.
