If you need a reliable and cheap source of a pulse train with a frequency close to 50 Hz and a fairly high frequency stability (about 0,5%), you can implement it using a pulse shaper from the mains voltage. Although these sources are inferior to quartz sources, for many applications (for example, for a timer) they are preferable, since they are distinguished by the simplicity and availability of components.

A diagram of one of the variants of such a pulse shaper operating as part of a time interval programmer is shown in fig. 1. The output circuit of the shaper is galvanically isolated from the network by a self-made optocoupler, consisting of a neon lamp HL1 and a phototransistor VT1. Resistor R1 limits the current through the neon lamp. Diode VD1 provides ignition of the lamp for only one half-cycle. Without the diode, the output frequency will be 100 Hz. A current amplifier is made on the transistor VT2.

Pulse sequencer

The shape of the output pulses is close to rectangular (Fig. 2). Their duty cycle depends on the type of neon lamp used, but, as a rule, it is more than 2,7.

Pulse sequencer

The neon lamp HL1 was used from the SVP-4 television program selector; any one with an ignition voltage of 70 ... 80 V is suitable. Instead of FT-1K, you can use a phototransistor FT-2K.

The neon lamp should be turned on so that its plate electrode is connected to the anode of the VD1 diode. The neon lamp and the phototransistor are mutually placed so that its light-receiving window is opposite the most brightly luminous zone of the lamp. The resulting optocoupler must be closed with an opaque cap that protects the phototransistor from external light.

Any diode VD1 is suitable with a reverse voltage greater than the ignition voltage of a neon lamp. It is possible to replace the phototransistor FT-1K with a photodiode (FDK-1, FD-10K, etc.), but this will require one more stage of current amplification.

When using the shaper in conjunction with TTL counters, its output signal must first be passed through the Schmitt trigger of the K155TL1 microcircuit, for example.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Acer to compete with Asustek in the budget laptop market 26.03.2008

Asustek's near-absolute success in the market for Asustek's inexpensive and portable Eee PC laptop made it clear to the Taiwanese developer's competitors that cheap laptops are and will continue to be bought. Perhaps that is why, a few months after the official announcement of the Eee PC, many manufacturers of portable computers announced their intention to present an alternative to the ASUS subnotebook in the near future.

One such company is Acer. According to the developer's press service, two models of portable PCs will soon be released - the 8,9-inch Aspire and the 12,1-inch Slim Gemstone Aspire. Moreover, the IT giant has optimistic plans for the future - in the second half of 2008, Acer plans to ship from 6 million to 6,5 million budget computers.

It is interesting to note that in March, Acer ordered 1 million 12,1-inch matrices from LCD panel manufacturer AU Optoelectronics (AUO), which, by the way, are $40-50 cheaper than high-end panels of the same size.
