The era of graphene is coming

09.10.2013

In 2015, mass production of graphene will begin - scientists and engineers from the startup Graphene Frontiers are sure of this.

In September, the US National Science Foundation gave the University of Pennsylvania $744 to develop a startup called Graphene Frontiers. Such generosity can be explained by the prospects of a startup that should organize the mass production of graphene. The availability of graphene is of great importance for the development of many promising technologies based on this material, which has unique properties.

Graphene Frontiers plans to implement a new technology for the large-scale production of high-quality rolled graphene. The company hopes to be the first to adapt the chemical vapor deposition method, which is often used in laboratories and small industries to create polycrystalline graphene, to industrial needs.

Although polycrystalline graphene has found applications in devices such as advanced composite materials and high-frequency transistors, single-crystal graphene has much more attractive properties. Unfortunately, modern technologies for the production of single-crystal graphene, to put it mildly, are far from industrial applications, for example, the method of separating a graphene monolayer from graphite using adhesive tape. Other methods, such as the separation of carbon layers using plasma, or various chemical methods, do not produce very good quality graphene. For the mass introduction of new generation graphene electronics, a new technology for the mass production of single-crystal graphene is needed.

The chemical vapor deposition method allows the production of very high quality synthetic graphene and can be applied to the production of electronics, solar panels and other devices where transparent conductors are required. Graphene Frontiers specialists plan to use continuous rolling (roll-to-roll) for the production of graphene. This is a flexible circuit manufacturing method in which microcircuits are printed on a continuous substrate tape that is rewound from one roller to another. The combination of chemical vapor deposition technology and continuous rolling will produce high-quality graphene electronic components, which will open up a new generation electronics market.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Computer in Orange Pi 800 keyboard 07.06.2022

The company, which has previously released a number of Orange Pi single-board computers, introduced its first computer in the Orange Pi 800 keyboard. This is almost a complete analogue of the Raspberry Pi 400, although there are also differences.

Inside is a six-core Rockchip RK3399 processor with two ARM Cortex-A72 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores. The video chip Mali-T860 is responsible for the graphics. Such an SoC is most often used in low-cost TV boxes.

The operating system is Orange Pi, which is based on Arch Linux, as well as Chromium OS (an open source version of Google Chrome OS). So the novelty is suitable for learning.

Other specifications include:

4 GB LPDDR4 RAM;
64 GB eMMC flash;
1 HDMI 2.0;
1 VGA port;
1 x 3,5mm microphone/headphone jack;
1 Gigabit Ethernet port;
2 USB 3.0 Type-A ports;
1 USB 2.0 type A port;
1 USB Type-C (for power);
microSD card reader;
Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 LTE adapters;
