Without dogma

Heinrich Sienkiewicz
Heinrich Sienkiewicz

Phraseologism: No dogma.

Meaning: About an unprincipled selfish person.

Origin: The title of the novel (1891) by the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916), the protagonist of the novel is a type of Nietzsche's "superman", a sybarite seeking pleasure, living without moral principles.

Random phraseology:

Fire and sword.

Meaning:

With merciless cruelty, destroying everything.

Origin:

From Latin: "Igni et ferro". Literal translation: "Fire and iron." The expression is based on an ancient way to heal wounds with the help of surgical intervention ("iron") and cauterization ("fire") - for disinfection. This method of treatment went down in history thanks to the legendary physician of ancient Greece, Hippocrates (c. 460-370 BC), who said: "What medicine does not heal, iron heals; what iron does not heal, fire heals" - Quae medicamenta non sanant, ferrum sanat, quae ferrum non sanat, ignis sanat. (The aphorism of Hippocrates has a continuation: "... and what fire does not cure, it should be considered incurable.") Later in Ancient Rome, this expression was rethought in relation to military affairs. So, among the Roman poets of the 1846st century. BC e. (Ovid, Propertius, etc.) the expression is used in the meaning: to fight the enemy with "fire" (by betraying enemy cities to fire) and "iron" (sword). Therefore, later the expression "by fire and sword" entered the language of European peoples. In Russian, it gained particular popularity after the publication of the novel "Fire and Sword" by the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz (1916-XNUMX), where he talks about the confrontation between the Polish gentry and the Ukrainian Cossacks in the XNUMXth century.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Climate change has affected the taste of coffee 02.11.2021

The sensory qualities of coffee, such as taste and aroma, are affected by climate change. That is, productivity is not the only factor vulnerable to environmental changes. You should also take into account changes in flavor notes, brightness and other factors. This was found by researchers from Tufts University and the State of Montana in the United States.

"A bad cup of coffee has not only sensory implications, but also an economic impact. Factors affecting coffee production have a big impact on consumer interest, the price of coffee and, ultimately, the livelihoods of the farmers who grow it," he said. Sean Cash is professor of global nutrition at Tufts University and senior author of the study.

The scientists analyzed 73 published articles examining the influence of 10 common environmental factors. It also details current adaptation strategies that can combat these effects, with hope for positive outcomes.

The most consistent trends the team found were that farms at higher altitudes were associated with better coffee flavor and aroma, while exposure to too much light was associated with reduced coffee quality.

A summary of the evidence has shown that coffee quality is also subject to changes due to water stress, temperature rise and carbon dioxide, although more research on these specific factors is needed.

Some ongoing climate change mitigation efforts look promising and feasible, but innovative solutions need to be developed to support coffee growth at all levels, the group says.
