Sort by: Balsam (Impatiens)

Family: Balsamic (Balsaminaceae)

Origin: Balsam is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Africa. It was first described by the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in the XNUMXth century.

Area: Balsams grow in many countries of the world, including India, China, Japan, Indonesia, Africa and South America.

Chemical composition: Balsam contains alkaloids, flavonoids, carotenoids, acids, sugars, vitamins and minerals. Especially valuable is the presence of alkaloids, which have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.

Economic value: Balsams are popular in landscaping and ornamental gardening for beautiful flower arrangements. They are also used medicinally as a remedy for joint pain, bruises, burns, and other skin conditions. In folk medicine, balsam is used to treat colds, coughs, bronchitis, etc.

Legends, myths, symbolism: One of the legends says that the name "balsam" comes from the Latin word "balsamum", which means "balm". The plant gets its name from its ability to secrete a sticky sap that is used medicinally to treat wounds and other ailments. Another legend says that the name "touchy" comes from the Greek word "adonis", which was a handsome man with whom the goddess of beauty Aphrodite was in love. But when Adonis was killed, Aphrodite turned him into a flower with beautiful petals that symbolize his beauty and tenderness. The symbolic meaning of balsam includes tenderness, sensuality, elegance and beauty. The plant can be used as a gift to express love, respect and gratitude. It also symbolizes purity and innocence due to its white color.

Balsam (touchy). Legends, myths, history

Balsam (touch-me-not)

Balsam is a flower with many names: "light", "touchy", "wet roly". Belongs to the balsamic family (balsaminaceae). Homeland: subtropics and tropics of Asia and Africa. Flowering begins from late spring to late autumn.

Balsam is one of the most unpretentious and popular plants for rooms, balconies and flower beds.

The botanical name of this plant is balsam. Many call this plant "roly wet" because of the small droplets on the leaves that the flower secretes, getting rid of excess moisture after heavy watering. The flower is also known under a different name - "light" for the bright color of flowers, for its continuous flowering, "everlasting flower".

The flower also has the nickname "touchy". It was called touchy because of the structural features of the seed box, when it ripens, its valves twist at the slightest touch and scatter the seeds with force in different directions. Another name - vanka stand up - balsam received for the ability of the stem to turn up, no matter what position the flower pot occupies.

In England, balsam is called "talker Lucy", "busy Lizzie" (Busy Lizzie), in Germany - "zealous Lisa". It is possible that the balsam plant received this name because of the constant flowering without getting tired.

There is a beautiful legend about this flower. The maiden Lada saw off the groom to the battle. He went far with the princely retinue, into the wild, Polovtsian steppes. The bonfires were burning, the tocsin rang, and Lada could not tear herself away from her betrothed: as if her heart sensed misfortune.

- I will return to you, my clear dawn, - said the groom, - at the very end of the world I will find you. And to make it easier for me to search, light a light in your window, it will show me the way.

The brave Russian went on a campaign and did not return home. He laid down his wild head at the Kayala River, on the edge of the Polovtsian steppe. And Lada was still waiting for him, and a light shone in her window. I waited a year, and another, and a third. And so the whole life passed in longing and sadness for the betrothed. I thought: he was about to knock on the door, seeing the light. Lada grew old, died, but the cherished light remained shining - it turned into a beautiful flower.

The flower, about which the legend is composed, is called just that - a light.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

New principle of X-ray generation 16.02.2021

X-rays, which are widely used in medicine, flaw detection and many other fields, are usually obtained using special vacuum devices called X-ray tubes. Inside these tubes, electrons are accelerated by a high electrical potential and collide with a metal anode. The energy of accelerated electrons is transferred to the metal atoms, which pass into an excited state, a complex oscillatory process occurs that generates a radiation flux in the X-ray range.

Unfortunately, the generated radiation flux spreads uniformly in all directions, and the properties of X-rays greatly complicate the task of focusing them and forming a narrow directional beam; moreover, the X-ray pulse front in most cases has an absolutely random shape.

However, physicists from the University of Göttingen have developed a new principle for generating X-rays, which allows you to get a beam directed in a strictly specified direction.

The new technology is based on a structure of three materials with completely different electronic characteristics. And the thickness of such a three-layer "sandwich" is only a few millionths of a millimeter.

An object made from such a thin layered material is placed in place of a metal anode in a conventional X-ray tube. X-ray parameters can be controlled at the stage of production of a multilayer anode by changing the order of alternation and thickness of layers of different materials.
