Golden bristle (scorched bristle, foxtail millet)

Golden bristle (Setaria sphacelata Stapf et Hubb) is a valuable fodder plant in the tropics. Used to create pastures, as well as for green fodder, hay and silage.

The average yield on fertile soils is 60-70 t/ha of green mass per 1 ha, on poor soils it decreases to 20 t, and when fertilized and irrigated, it reaches 160 t/ha. The green mass (on dry matter) contains 6,8-9,1% protein, 1,8-2,2% fat, 30,1-42,0% fiber, 36,1-47,7% BEV and 8,0 10,5-XNUMX% ash. Green mass and hay are well eaten by animals.

Comes from the Sudano-Zambezian zone. Introduced into culture in the 40s of the XX century.

Grown in tropical Africa, India and Australia.

Golden foxtail, singed foxtail, foxtail millet - rhizome-loose bush or loose bush grass. The root system is well developed (up to 14,3 t/ha), penetrates to a depth of up to 2,2 m, but about 90% of the roots are located in the soil layer up to 25 cm.

Stems 0,6-3,0 m high, well leafy.

Leaves 15-40 cm long, 3-12 mm wide.

The inflorescence is a spike-shaped, cylindrical panicle 7-25 cm long.

It grows in areas with an annual rainfall of 600-1250 mm. In the equatorial zone, it occurs at an altitude of up to 3000 m above sea level. It has significant drought tolerance. The foxtail herb remains green up to 1,5 months after the onset of the dry season. However, it gives high yields on sufficiently moist soils, with irrigation.

Golden bristle (scorched bristle, foxtail millet)

The duration of the period from sowing to seed ripening is 135-180 days. The foxtail gives good yields within 5-6 years. In culture, early-ripening and late-ripening varieties, lines, populations and clones are common. The highest yield (61-67 tons of green mass per 1 ha) was noted in line 1193 and the Kasungula variety.

It grows on various soils, but forms the largest yields on highly fertile soils and when fertilizing on medium-fertile soils.

Tillage includes ploughing, subsequent harrowing or disking and rolling.

Propagated by seeds and sometimes parts of the bush. Seeds are sown in a continuous row method (10-15 kg/ha), or wide-row (inter-row spacing 30-180 cm), or even square-nested according to the scheme 40x40 cm with a seeding rate of 4-10 kg/ha.

Joint crops of foxtail with legumes (Brazilian alfalfa, Javanese soybeans, etc.) are also used. It is advisable to include them in crop rotations with food and industrial crops. With this alternation of crops, soil fertility improves and crop rotation productivity increases. Vegetative propagation (by parts of a bush) is practiced in mountainous areas, in weedy areas and drying marshes. Planting method 30-40x30-40 cm.

After sowing and planting, rolling is necessary. After each grazing and mowing, fertilizers are applied, and especially nitrogen fertilizers (up to 260 kg of nitrogen per 1 ha).

Grazing of animals is carried out at intervals of 40-45 days and mowing - after 40-50 days (before flowering) at a plant height of about 50 cm. The green mass mowed during this period is well ensiled.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Revealed the secret of longevity of turtles 13.01.2022

Scientists for many years could not uncover the secret of the longevity of giant tortoises in Ecuador - as a rule, their life expectancy is more than 100 years. However, the mystery has recently been solved.

Giant tortoises have extra copies of genes involved in what is known as apoptosis, according to a study by scientists at the University at Buffalo in the US. This is a cell self-destruction process that protects turtles from the damaging effects of aging, including cancer.

Laboratory tests conducted on the giant tortoises of the Galapagos Islands confirmed the presence of a similar defense mechanism in these animals.

As the researchers note, when exposed to such stress, the cells of the Galapagos tortoise self-destruct much more easily than the cells of other species of turtles. What cells are destroyed before they have a chance to create a tumor. This helps prevent the development of cancer.

“These results are also of great interest because the long-lived fauna should have the highest incidence of cancer. Large creatures have more cells, and the more cells, the higher the likelihood of cancer mutations. The significance of this study is that if we can To determine how these turtles developed certain defense mechanisms, we may be able to find a way to use this to the benefit of humans," explained evolutionary biologist Vincent Lynch of the University at Buffalo.
