The patient's depressive state significantly reduces the effectiveness of chemotherapy treatment - the mechanism of this phenomenon was described by researchers from the Chinese University of Zhengzhou.

Patients with depression had lower blood levels of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which worsened their response to the drug and contributed to more frequent side effects from treatment.

The researchers worked with 186 patients who had recently been diagnosed with cancer and were receiving chemotherapy. The day before the start of treatment, scientists determined their emotional state and severity of depression. Other patient information was also collected to look for possible patterns.

Predictably, the highest levels of depression are diagnosed in people whose cancer has spread to multiple organs. Such patients responded worse to chemotherapy and more often showed various side effects from the treatment. The content of the BDNF protein in the blood of patients directly correlated with the number of cells that died from chemotherapy.

The authors of the work note that doctors should pay more attention to the emotional state of the patient. However, more research is needed to show exactly how antidepressants affect the increase in the level of the BDNF protein in the blood, and hence the effectiveness of treatment.
