The pressure that the blood in an artery exerts on its wall is called blood pressure. It depends on the strength of heart contractions, blood flow into the arterial system, the magnitude of cardiac output, the elasticity of the walls of blood vessels, blood viscosity and other factors. Blood pressure decreases with distance from the heart. Distinguish between systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure (maximum) - the greatest value of pressure in the arteries during systole of the heart. Diastolic (minimum) - the lowest value of pressure in the arteries during diastole of the heart.

Blood pressure is measured in the brachial artery using a sphygmomanometer (Riva-Rocci apparatus) or a membrane tonometer, using the Korotkov sound method. In recent years, automatic pressure meters have become widespread.

Blood pressure is measured with the patient sitting or lying down. At the same time, the arm is exposed, unbent at the elbow joint and laid on the table or edge of the bed at heart level with the palm up. The device is placed at the same level with the hand, the measurement is made as follows:

  • a cuff is placed on the shoulder so that a finger can be placed under it, the lower edge of the cuff is placed 2-3 cm above the elbow bend, the rubber tube is placed on the side;
  • feel the pulse on the ulnar artery, apply a phonendoscope to this place;
  • gradually pumping air into the cuff, through the phonendoscope listen to the appearance and disappearance of sounds corresponding to the pulse: the disappearance of sounds indicates that the artery is completely squeezed by the cuff; after that, the column of mercury is raised by another 30-40 mm;
  • slightly open the screw of the balloon and slowly release the air so that the mercury level does not decrease too quickly, while listening carefully: as soon as the pressure in the cuff becomes lower than the blood pressure in the artery, and the blood passes through the squeezed section of the artery, then sounds (tones) appear.

The pressure corresponding to the appearance of the first tone will be systolic (maximum), resulting from the pressure of blood on the artery wall during systole. As soon as the pressure on the artery from the cuff stops, the sounds disappear. The pressure corresponding to the moment of the disappearance of sounds is recorded as diastolic (minimum). The pressure value is noted on a scale in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and recorded as a fraction: in the numerator - the value of the maximum (systolic), in the denominator - the minimum (diastolic) pressure.

In order to control the reliability, the measurement is repeated at intervals of 2-3 minutes;

  • in the intervals between measurements, the cuff is not removed, and the air is completely released from it.
  • Normal for a healthy person is conditionally considered systolic pressure of 100-140, diastolic - 70-90 mm Hg. Art. In diseases, deviations are found
  • arterial pressure in the direction of both its increase - hypertension, and decrease - hypotension. An increase in blood pressure is observed in hypertension, nephritis, diseases of the endocrine system, and a decrease in shock, collapse, acute infectious diseases.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Painkiller made from the world's most pungent substance 26.11.2018

In Morocco, there is a plant Euphorbia resinifera, or resin spurge. Its main substance is resiniferatoxin, on the Scoville scale it contains 16 billion units. It is 10 times hotter than a Carolina Ripper and 000 million times hotter than a jalapeño. That is, this substance will simply kill your nerve endings. But that's why it could be the future universal pain reliever.

Scientists from the University of San Diego, USA, have found that if resiniferatoxin is injected into the body, then there it combines with TRPV1, a molecule that is found in the nerve endings that feel pain. As a result, a channel opens in the nerve ending, through which there is an increased influx of calcium. Such an overload of calcium deactivates the nerve that feels pain, but at the same time retains all other sensations, that is, the patient does not feel pain, but perceives even a light touch. True, before the introduction of the toxin, one must not forget to first anesthetize this place with conventional anesthesia, otherwise the consequences will be the saddest, since the pain will be incredible before decontamination.

Researcher Michael Iadarola tested the effects of resiniferatoxin on dogs with diseased knees. "The effect is incredible, and lasts much longer than I expected, on average, the owners ask for a second injection only after about five months. And the animals themselves, which were limping before, begin to run and live without pain."

Resiniferotoxin does not require frequent administration, does not cause any addiction, works only where it is injected, and does not give any narcotic effects. Perhaps its only drawback is increased efficiency. It really completely removes any manifestations of the pain syndrome, which, coupled with the remaining sensitivity, can lead to injuries, since the patient simply does not get any discomfort if he decides to drink, for example, too hot tea. But for patients with severe illness, this is perhaps the least of the troubles. So resiniferotoxin is already being considered as a radical alternative to all opioids.
