Safe Operation

1. General requirements for labor protection

1.1. To work with a chainsaw, workers are allowed, at least 18 years old, who have passed a medical commission, as well as training and passing an exam in the commission of an enterprise and having a certificate. Admission to independent work is issued in writing in the briefing log at the workplace.

Before admission to work, the worker must undergo an introductory briefing both on safety precautions and at the workplace.

1.2. The main hazards when working with a chainsaw are:

  • flying branches;
  • cutting chain;
  • increased vibration;
  • traffic fumes.

1.3. The worker must know:

  • device, principle of operation of a chainsaw;
  • the main types and principles of malfunctions of this equipment and how to eliminate them;
  • safe practices when working with a chainsaw;
  • what is the recoil effect and what consequences it can lead to;
  • refueling procedure;
  • chain lubrication procedure;
  • the procedure for checking the wear of the saw mechanism;
  • the procedure for sharpening and adjusting the height of the cutting limiter;
  • chain tension adjustment.

1.4. Personnel must wear the following PPE when operating a chainsaw:

  • safety trousers with saw protection;
  • protective helmet with ear protectors;
  • goggles;
  • special protective gloves;
  • safety boots with chain protection with metal insert and non-slip soles;
  • have a portable first aid kit when working with a chainsaw.

1.5. Never use a saw with defective safety features.

1.6. The worker must observe and be able to:

  • rules of internal labor regulations;
  • fire safety rules;
  • the procedure for checking the chainsaw before starting work and its daily preventive maintenance;
  • assist injured victims.

1.7. The worker must be aware that in case of violation of the requirements of the instructions, he is liable in accordance with applicable law.

2. Labor protection requirements before starting work

2.1. Put on the appropriate overalls and prepare other personal protective equipment (PPE).

2.2. Protect the installation area, hang warning posters, provide the workplace with fire extinguishing equipment.

2.3. Verify:

  • serviceability of a chainsaw;
  • serviceability of the chain and chain brake handle;
  • serviceability of the blocking lever of the throttle;
  • serviceability of the chain catcher when it breaks;
  • protective element of the right hand;
  • vibration suppression systems;
  • serviceability of the switch, muffler.

2.4. Fill the saw with petrol. Do not use open flame when refueling. After filling is complete, tighten the cap securely.

2.5. Before starting the engine of the chainsaw, be sure to move it from the place of refueling, let the engine run at idle.

2.6. Make sure that there are no strangers near the workplace.

3. Labor protection requirements during work

3.1. After the inspection, making sure that the chainsaw is in good condition, that there are no people and animals, it is allowed to start felling trees.

3.2. Always hold the saw firmly with your right hand on the rear handle and with your left hand on the front.

3.3. Grip the saw handles tightly with your whole hand. This girth must be used regardless of whether you are "right-handed" or you are "left-handed". This grip reduces kickback and keeps the saw under constant control.

3.4. Most often, kickback occurs when pruning branches. You should always be in a stable position and make sure that there are no reasons that would make you stagger or lose your balance.

3.5. Carelessness can result in kickback if the kickback area of the blade touches a branch, nearby tree, or other object.

3.6. Do not lift the saw when working above shoulder level and do not cut with the tip of the saw blade, do not work with one hand.

3.7. Be especially careful when cutting with the top edge of the saw blade, i.e. when sawing from the underside of the object. This method is called pull sawing. In such cases, a shock may occur. At this point, the chain tends to push the saw in the direction of the worker. Therefore, at this point, a sufficient counteracting force should be applied.

3.8. Do not operate a chainsaw if you are tired or have drunk alcohol.

3.9. Avoid working in bad weather (thick fog, heavy rain, thick fog, strong wind). Working in cold weather is very tiring and poses additional risks.

3.10. Care must be taken when pruning small branches and try to avoid sawing shrubs. Small branches can be caught in the chain and thrown in your direction, causing serious injury.

3.11. Be very careful when sawing branches and logs that are under load or tension. A log or branch can suddenly return to its natural position, which can lead to loss of control and serious consequences.

3.12. Always use full throttle when sawing.

3.13. After each sawing, the idle speed must be reduced.

3.14. When sawing, do the following:

  • so that the saw blade is not caught in the cut;
  • make sure that the log does not split;
  • so that the saw chain does not catch on the ground or other object during or after sawing;
  • check if there is a risk of kickback;
  • whether the conditions affect the safety of your work.

3.15. For felling a tree, you need to choose the direction that is most convenient for subsequent trimming and cutting. You can knock down a tree to the ground, where it can be relatively safely moved.

3.16. Do not let the tree fall on other trees.

3.17. Make sure that during the fall of a tree, you are not hit by a split tree or dry branches.

3.18. During critical felling work, it is necessary to raise the hearing protector as soon as sawing is finished in order to hear sounds and warning commands.

3.19. For felling a tree, three cuts are made. First of all, a notch, consisting of an upper and lower cut. After that, the main cut is made. By making these cuts correctly, you can control the direction of the fall quite accurately.

3.20. The possibility of influencing the direction of the fall will be completely lost if the fault line is too narrow or the guide and main cuts are poorly placed relative to each other.

3.21. Before moving the saw, switch off the engine and block the chain with the chain brake. Carry the saw with the chain saw blade facing backwards and with the protective cover on.

3.22. Do not lower the saw down with the engine running until you are out of sight and the chain brake is released.

4. Labor protection requirements in emergency situations

4.1. If the chain is caught in the cut:

  • stop the engine;
  • do not attempt to pull the saw out of the clamp. This can damage the chain if the saw suddenly comes loose. Use a lever to open the kerf and remove the blade.

4.2. If you are injured while working with a chainsaw, contact the first-aid post or call an ambulance, notify the master.

5. Labor protection requirements at the end of work

5.1. At the end of the chainsaw, you must:

  • clean the chainsaw from the outside;
  • clean the chain brake;
  • clean the air filter;
  • check the operation of the starter and its cord for wear or damage;
  • check the operation of the switch;
  • clean the spark plug;
  • clean the cooling fins of the cylinder;
  • Clean or replace muffler mesh.
  • turn the saw blade over.
  • check the tightness of all nuts and bolts.

5.2. Report all noticed malfunctions in the operation of the burner and the measures taken to report to the work manager.

5.3. Remove overalls, wash hands with soap.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Dream control device 24.05.2023

What if there was a device that could control dreams? What if you could go to bed and were told that you were dreaming? This is somewhat the main idea of the new research conducted by MIT scientists and the device they have created. The premise here sounds like it was ripped out of Christopher Nolan's Inception, but it's not science fiction.

A team of scientists used targeted dream incubation and created a dream control device that helped boost creative performance after sleep. The study is built on assumptions about how dreams and creativity are related.

That's why MIT scientists decided to investigate this connection and see if they could create a device that would control dreams. The idea was to see if they could insert specific themes into dreams, which would allow them to effectively determine what the dreamer was dreaming about, at least to a certain extent. The device, which they called Dormio (Beginning), allowed them to do this.

The purpose of the device was not just to control dreams, says MIT neuroscientist and study co-author Kathleen Esfahani. The researchers wanted to see if they could insert topics that would further help guide creative tasks. The study relied heavily on a preliminary study by French sleep researchers, which found that participants were more likely to solve math problems after waking up from a hypnogogic sleep.

This is an intriguing study that will help find ways to use the creative functions of the brain more effectively. However, for now, it helps people better understand how their brains work. And, if you want to check things out, you can try the online version of the dream monitoring device.

If you're having trouble with creativity, it might be a good idea to try and take a nap, then wake up and watch your creative powers flow. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to fall asleep quickly if you're having a hard time getting your brain to slow down for a minute.
