Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Food emulsifiers harm the intestines 09.03.2015

Emulsifiers have long been widely used in the food industry, they are found in chocolate, mayonnaise, ice cream and many, many more products. They are used to mix substances that are immiscible with each other - for example, water and oil. Usually the oil forms a film on the surface of the water, and no matter how we shake the mixture, we will not be able to stir the oil in the water. But, if you add an emulsifier, the oil will break up into many small particles that will be distributed throughout the water volume, and the resulting mixture is now called an emulsion. A good example of an emulsion is milk, but it comes naturally. To get chocolate or ice cream, you need to add an emulsifier to the mixture of substances, then all the constituent parts of the product will mix properly.

Do emulsifiers affect health? For a long time, nothing was known about this, until at some point the researchers noticed that one of the emulsifiers, carboxymethylcellulose, causes intestinal inflammation in animals predisposed to it. To understand why this is happening, Benoit Chassaing and his colleagues at Georgia State University and Cornell University gave two common emulsifiers, the already mentioned carboxymethylcellulose and polysorbate 80, to two groups of mice, normal and with genetic modifications that make the animals prone to inflammation. bowel and metabolic syndrome.

Scientists note that in mutant mice that received emulsifiers with food and water, after 12 weeks, the likelihood of intestinal colitis doubled: if without additives, the disease began in 40% of cases, then with emulsifiers - in 80%. In normal, wild-type mice, full-fledged colitis did not develop, but in them, too, carboxymethylcellulose and polysorbate provoked inflammation and some metabolic disorders.

Metabolic syndrome is manifested in the appearance of excess weight, an increase in the proportion of adipose tissue, and an increase in blood glucose levels. Due to violations of fat and carbohydrate metabolism, everything can end up with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. But the syndrome itself can begin with chronic intestinal inflammation. And among the main causes of inflammatory bowel disease, which manifests itself in the form of colitis or Crohn's disease, changes in the microflora are often cited. The benefits of bacterial symbionts can hardly be overestimated, they help digest food, protect against allergies, and cooperate with the immune system when it is necessary to repel the attack of pathogenic microbes. However, for all their usefulness, intestinal bacteria must stay away from the intestinal walls themselves: if they come into direct contact with its cells, the immune system will regard this as a pathogenic attack. Given the abundance of bacteria in the gut, it is not surprising that the inflammatory immune response becomes chronic.

To prevent this from happening, the intestinal wall is protected by a layer of mucus. However, emulsifiers seem to destroy its protective layer: in mice given emulsifying nutritional supplements, the distance between bacteria and intestinal epithelial cells was halved. On the other hand, bad bacteria appeared in the microflora, capable of breaking down protective mucus. In addition, the proportion of "pro-inflammatory" species, which in themselves strongly irritate intestinal immunity, increased. So emulsifiers can provoke inflammation in two ways: either directly providing access to bacteria to the epithelium, or changing the composition of the microflora in favor of inflammatory and mucus-splitting varieties.

However, it should be noted that emulsifiers did not trigger inflammation with a 100% probability. This is understandable: the intestinal microflora is sensitive to a variety of factors, from genetic to environmental, so the effect of substances that provoke inflammation can be reduced to zero as a result. However, if a person is prone to inflammation, if he has problems with the immune system or with the intestines, then perhaps he really should be more attentive to emulsifying food additives. On the other hand, so far we are talking about only two substances that have also been tested on mice - who knows, maybe the human microflora has long adapted to all types of emulsifiers used in the food industry.
