Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Road traffic can exacerbate allergies 20.12.2018

A new study by American scientists has shown that air currents from heavy traffic can disperse ragweed seeds tens of meters from their starting location - a huge boost compared to the usual 1-meter seed travel radius from parent plants.

The researchers set up a field experiment to determine how far ragweed seeds travel on a busy road with fast moving cars compared to less busy roads. In each trial, they placed 100 seeds dyed with fluorescent paint along the edges of roads where they would normally fall, allowing moving vehicles to decide their fate. The scientists then returned with UV lamps to mark the new positions of the seeds.

Within 48 hours, the seeds moved to new locations. Most remained close to their original location. But air currents, due to heavy traffic, moved some of the seeds tens of meters: in the record case, this distance was 71 meters - about two-thirds of the length of an American football field. Even on roads with less traffic, the seeds were scattered over distances of up to 40 meters.

The researchers then mapped roadside ragweed sites for two years in a row to see how much ragweed populations increased in the direction of traffic. In the second year, the team registered twice as many seedlings in the direction of traffic, compared to the opposite direction, where the influence of cars was almost zero.

The study links the spread of an allergic plant species to traffic patterns for the first time. The results show that people suffering from seasonal allergies can be helped by carefully mowing roadside plants. But the right time to mow is just before the seeds are ripe, otherwise the mowers will spray them even further.
