Some local objects and signs can also serve as a simple, though not very accurate "compass" for the traveler.

It is known, for example, that mosses and lichens cover the northern side of trees and stones, resin protrudes more on the southern half of the trunk of a coniferous tree, ants arrange their dwellings to the south of the nearest trees or bushes and make the southern slope of the anthill flatter than the northern one, the altar of the Orthodox churches are located in the east, etc. (Fig. 6.23).

It is not recommended to be guided by such incorrect, although well-known signs, as the density and splendor of the crown on one side or another of a tree standing alone or in the thick of the forest, according to annual growth rings of wood on the stumps of sawn trees. Both the density of the crown and the width of the growth rings depend on a number of factors, among which the illumination by the sun may not be the main one.

Very carefully one must resort to orientation along quarterly pillars in the forest. Although it is believed that the edge between two adjacent faces of the column with the smallest numbers points to the north (Fig. 6.24), it must be remembered that clearings in this forest can be cut not along the meridians and parallels, but along the relief line or parallel to roads and land boundaries.

Tourist Marking Orientation

Tourist marking is a system of special symbols that are applied to local objects to mark tourist routes.

Marking includes various types of marks, directional arrows, pointers and other signs, which in their symbols, shape, color and alphanumeric code carry the information necessary for the tourist and help to navigate the terrain (Fig. 6.25).

The main element of the marking - the route mark - has the shape of a rectangle (the main format is 180x240 mm), on the white field of which there is a colored stripe or a square set at the corner. A stamp with a red stripe indicates a multi-day categorical route, with a blue one - with the "Tourist of the Russian Federation" badge, with a green one - 3-4 days, with a yellow one - 1-2 days (with overnight stays). Stamps with colored squares indicate different hiking routes without overnight stays.

Orientation in local subjects

Rice. 6.25. Some recommendatory, prohibiting and restricting signs of tourist marking: 1 - attraction; 2 - a monument or memorial place; 3 - ford; 4 - bus stop; 5 - a place for making a fire; 6 - halt is prohibited; 7 - a place dangerous for swimming; 8 - not allowed to touch

Focusing on the stamps, tourists can follow the route without a map, compass and description: index, warning, prescriptive and prohibition signs will tell you where there are objects for inspection, bivouac sites, shelters, protected natural attractions, places for swimming, what is the distance to one or another point, what types of tourist activities are allowed, what dangers are expected ahead, etc. Since marking is carried out in full, as a rule, only on planned routes, in amateur trips of I-III categories of complexity, simplified marking signs are also used for orientation. Some of these uniform signs are shown in fig. 6.26.

Orientation in local subjects

Rice. 6.26. Simplified tourist marking: 1 - observation point; 2 - monument; 3 - drinking water; 4 - a shelter, a place for a bivouac; 5 - danger; 6 - end of the road

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Generic Flu Cure 12.06.2012

An international team of scientists have published the results of their research into a universal flu cure in Nature Biotechnology.

Scientists have discovered a protein that could help fight a potentially deadly flu epidemic. Antiviral drugs made on the basis of this protein are able to "turn off" the main functions of the virus and prevent the serious consequences of infection. Through experiments in the lab, the new treatment proved effective and was able to block many strains of pandemic flu, including several H1N1 (Spanish flu, swine flu) and H5N1 (bird flu).

In their previous research, the scientists have used computer-aided design to create proteins that can target the vulnerable spots of the virus, with which it adapts to its environment. Now scientists have been able to optimize the design of proteins using deep DNA sequencing technology and eventually create a drug that effectively attacks the target structures of the virus. The technology used by the scientists allows simultaneously "sorting out" millions of variants of the protein structure, identifying and saving beneficial mutations. In this way, proteins can be reprogrammed, for example, to "connect" to the key structures of the virus and block them.

This study opens up the broadest possibilities for creating a universal cure for influenza. In addition, this technology can be applied to the development of drugs for many different infections.
